This is getting kind of ridiculous, trying to come up with a report for the 20^th time for the Cinema Wasteland show. Each time I start to write these, I keep trying to think of saying something that I haven’t said over and over again. This is a great show and one of the best times we have twice a year. There really is no other show like it, hands down. Sure, there are a lot of people that come here to do more partying than being movie fans, but to each their own. Everybody is there to have good time and it seems that every one does just that at each and every show. In the Kryptic van this time out was gore artist Putrid, Liquid Cheese creator Dave Kosanke and his buddy Ryan Olson. Never a dull moment with this tribe!

This year, the theme they had going was the appearance of cult film maker Frank Henenlotter. From his original classic BASKET CASE and the sequels, to drug inducing BRAIN DAMAGE, to the wacky FRANKENHOOKER, Frank seems to have quite a strong following. He doesn’t make too many convention appearances either so it was quite the unique thrill for fans to be able to meet him. Joining him for the show was a group of people that had worked with him over the years: Kevin Van Hentenryck, Beverly Bonner, James Lorinz, Charlotte Kemp, David Emge, Anthony Sneed, and makeup artist Gabe Bartalos. Another makeup artist that was there, John Caglione Jr., who worked on the first BASKET CASE movie, would later go on to win an Oscar for his work on the 1991 film DICK TRACY.

There were two different Q&A sessions with Henenlotter. The first one was with the people that were involved with BASKET CASE, which included Bonner, Van Hentenryck and Caglione Jr. The next Q&A session with Henenlotter had the guests that had worked him on FRANKENHOOKER and BAD BIOLOGY: Lorinz, Kemp, Sneed, Emge, Bartalos, and Bonner once again (since she is always in his movies). Henenlotter is one of those filmmakers that just loves film. And the cheesier and outrageous the better. But he knows his stuff, that is for sure. His passion for it overrides any obstacles when it came to his budgets when he made his own films. He simply had no money but somehow got the films made. He understood what he wanted to do and made it happen. And if anything can be said about this film, they are very memorable. You will never forget the stuff that Henenlotter shows us. And during the Q&A’s, we got to hear quite a few of these stories. From trying to find places to film, to dealing with the MPAA (or deciding not to), to just trying to get his film seen, there were plenty of laughs, unbelievable stories from his cult icon.

Other guests at the show included a few names from the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, Kyra Schon, John Russo, and George Kosana. ‘80s porn star Ginger Lynn was also there at the show, much to the delight of quite a few of the fans. Actor William Forsythe was there as well, and making sure that fans of his movie DEAR MR. GACY were not hero worshipping Gacy himself, signing every piece of memorabilia from that movie with “Fuck Gacy” before siging his name. I give a lot of credit to Forsythe for making sure the fans knew the difference between movie monsters and this very real one.

Another guest for the show was adult film star Ginger Lynn. While she’s not a draw to me personally, there were quite a few people there that were very happy to meet her.

But besides the guests, it really is the fans and the other dealers there that make this show so much fun. We see the regulars that are coming back each and every show, getting to talk about movies with them and fellow dealers; it is always a good time. Which is why we have been there since their very first show and will continue to do them as long as they have them. Until April of 2012!
