FANGORIA'S WEEKEND OF HORRORS LUCIO FULCI "I wanted to recapture the moody atmosphere of witchcraft and paganism . . . prevalent when Europeans first settled in the Caribbean during the 1700's." "The actors had a hard time accepting the fact that we stuck living worms on their faces." LUCIO FULCI on his film ZOMBIE
A lot of people had turned up for this show to see Fulci. This was his first American appearance at a convention. I think the best part of the show was that Fulci had the chance to realize just how much of a following he had here in the states. From what he said at the show, he was blown away. He talked of many things during his Q&A sessions, with the help of Loris Curci as translator, from the real reason for his leaving the production of ZOMBIE 3, to what was really behind the ending of CITY OF THE WALKING DEAD, and to his newest project, a remake of THE WAX MASK that would be produced by Dario Argento.
While some may consider him to
be a hack, or just a director of gory films, they really haven't experienced
themselves with his work. He's made films in just about every genre there
is. Yes, he mainly will be remembered for his horror films. But
considering he made several horror classics, such as ZOMBIE, THE BEYOND, CITY OF
THE LIVING DEAD, and HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, I wouldn't consider that a bad
thing, but really quite an accomplishment. Click on the thumbnail pic below to see full size photo.
FANGORIA'S WEEKEND OF HORRORS THE BALL IS BACK!
Out of all the different series in this genre, from the Freddys, Jasons, and even the Alien series, I don't think there's been one that has been consistently entertaining, inventive and highly original as the PHANTASM series. This is no doubt due to it's creator, Don Coscarelli, who I give so much credit for holding on to the rights to the series, making sure that each film is done the way he wants it. Not like some other films that are sold off after the first film is a success with the original creator becoming the "Executive Producer". But as we all know, even the most original and well written screenplay can not stand by itself. Enter the cast of PHANTASM. These actors brought these characters to life (and death in some cases). Whether we related to the young Michael, cheering on Reggie, or were fascinated by the ominous Tall Man, we always were anxiously waiting to see what was going to happen next with each installment. And with Don Coscarelli behind the camera, we really never knew what to expect. DON COSCARELLI, ANGUS SCRIM, A. MICHAEL BALDWIN, REGGIE BANNISTER, & BILL THORNBURY
"I would write that Paul Naschy had
at least done his best and that he cared about what he was doing. I was
capable of mistakes - to do it well or to do it poorly - but I assure you is
that I did it with feeling and affection. It was truly a great honor to meet the Hombre Lobo himself at the Fangoria Convention in January of 1998. It's not often one gets the chance to meet a horror icon like Mr. Naschy. For not only is he a star of many horror films, but a true fan himself. He never stayed in the horror genre because it was popular or to make a lot of money, but because he truly loved the genre. So many people in this business leave the horror genre to make 'real films'. But Paul Naschy stayed to make the films that he wanted to. And for that, I give him a lot of credit. "Violence is a means of communication, a way of expressing myself. I am attracted to violence because it is a phenomenon of our times, a new form of protest and a refusal of all the established values. My films are primal screams which kindred souls can recognize and respond to."
