7-25-10 A SLIGHT CHANGE IN APPEARANCE
You obviously notice right away something a little different
with the way the Krypt looks. We have changed it around a bit, creating a
navigational boarder to your left, which shows all the different Features we
have here at the
Krypt. These were all listed under our Features line before, but we
weren't sure if everybody knew that. Since most computer monitors now
are a little wider, we could go back to having a navigational bar on the and
still have enough room for content. Granted, we could always fill
those sides up with ads, banners, and be just like most of the other sites out
there, but we still have no plans to do that. The only advertisements that
you'll see on this site are the ones that WE decide are important enough to tell you about. None of this blind
banner crap here, making it look like every other site out there. At least
as long as I'm running show.
So take a look to the left and see if there's a section that
maybe you never seen before, or maybe it has been a while. There's is
plenty of fun reading over there, as well as tons of different photos from the
countless conventions that we've been going to over the last 20 years. Yes, some of
the sections are still under construction, like the Sub-Genre guide, but there
is still enough content there to keep you interested. And of course, as
always, we'd love to hear any feedback.
KRYPTIC ARMY - LAST WEEK FOR JULY MISSION
Only 1 week left, soldiers. So let's get those reports
in before those alien bastards take over the world! Then get ready to take
on a whole different breed of killers next month.
T-SHIRT PAGE
Those of you that have seen us that the conventions over the years, know that we
mainly deal in horror reference books, posters, and stuff. We've never
really wanted to get into the T-shirt business, mainly because there are so many
other great places out there already. And the last thing we wanted to do
is compete with them. But since there are been a few designs that we had
never seen on a shirt before, we've decided to take those matters in our own
hands and make them happen. Earlier this year, we had artist Putrid come
up with a design for a Paul Naschy tribute shirt, which he did and amazing job
on. But we're not stopping there. We have a few more shirts in the
making, with some more completely original ideas which we think are going to be
pretty fun.
So we have created a new page on our site to show the shirts
that we have currently and what is coming soon. Just click the graphic
link on the left for all the info, or you could click HERE.
MEAT GRINDER REVIEW
We've posted our review for this Thailand movie that is being
marketed as one of those gory torture-porn movies. Which is a shame since
its a much better film than that. Head over to our
Reviews section to get our full take on this film.
HORROR HISTORY
This week, we take a look at a man that had a helping hand in
creating one of the genre's oldest and greatest creatures of all time.
Head over to our Horror History page to discover
who this might be.
MYSTERY PHOTO
Our photo from last week was one of the more sleazier gore films from Lucio
Fulci, but did pack a hefty punch. It was from NEW YORK RIPPER (1982).
And for a little bit of trivia, the young lady in the photo who it about to get
very up close and personal with that razor blade is Daniela Doria, who had the
pleasure of getting killed in Fulci's films several times. You will
probably remember her from the opening of HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY (1981) when she
gets a butcher knife stabbed through the back of her head, coming out of her
mouth.
So we have a few scholars that were able to recognize this
pic. And those are Hoby Abernathy, Nancy Cremer, Mike Dudley, Erik Martin, John Pata, and
Will Wilson. Nice job, people.
So let us take a look at this week's photo and see what you
can come up with. We will give you hint that it came out around the same
time as NEW YORK RIPPER....maybe a year or two earlier....but no more
hints....we want this image to be burned into your brain until you figure it
out. Good luck. Just click
HERE to send us
your answer. And remember, even if you're not sure, send in your
guess....you just never know.
7-18-10 WILDCLAW WINS!
After mentioning this over our last two updates, we just
wanted to give a HUGE thanks to anyone who took the time to vote for WildClaw
Theater in the Chase Community Giving program, because they WON! Granted,
they made it in at the bottom of the top 200 by the skin of their pointed little teeth, but none
the less they did make it. For a small theater company like this that is
filled with people devoted to bringing serious horror the stage, this is going
to be very, very helpful. So again, if you voted, I know they appreciate
it, but I do as well because it shows that us fellow horror fans are there to
help and support others out there that are fighting the good fight. Well
Done, People!
Of course, you can find out about WildClaw and all of their
upcoming events by checking out their website by clicking

KRYPTIC ARMY -
JOIN FOR FUN, THRILLS, & PRIZES!
Okay troops, little bit of an update here. First of all, just a little
reminder that the month is a little more than half over, so we're hoping our
current soldiers are making it way to the front line to tackle this month's
mission. Keep fighting the good fight.
And now, in a little attempt to get more members in our Army,
and to make the current members drool with anticipation (at least hopefully), we
thought that we would list some of the items that are in the prize closet and
will be given away after this year is over. As we said in the beginning,
every month you've completed your mission, you will have your name thrown in the
drawing. If you've completed all 12 months, it will be in the drawing 12
times. Granted, you can only win once, but you will have a much better
chance. But even still, if you've just started, that doesn't mean you
can't win. There is that chance. So for you people out there that
have not joined our Army, I strongly suggest that you think again. And not
only do you have the chance to win a great prize, but you also will have fun
each month seeking out new films that you've never seen before.
So here's a few of the things we have so far:
Spanish Lobby Card for RE-ANIMATOR signed by director Stuart Gordon
Mini Poster print from RE-ANIMATOR signed by director Stuart Gordon
TRICK 'r TREAT mini poster signed by director Michael Dougherty
8x10 still from the original MY BLOODY VALENTINE signed by director George
Mihalka and actor Peter Cowper
DARKNESS mini poster signed by director Leif Jonker and actor Gary Miller
Lobby card from NIGHT OF THE CREEPS signed by director Fred Dekker
Lobby card from STANLEY signed by director William Grefe
And we still have another 5 1/2 months to go to collect even
more stuff. So if you have not joined our Kryptic Army, or you already are
on our mailing list but haven't participated in the Monthly Missions, then we
strongly suggest that you do so. It will be a lot of fun, you'll see some
great movies (and maybe some not so great ones), increase your knowledge about
the genre, and possibly win something cool. Not to mention being the envy
of all your friends! Okay, that last one might be a stretch...
For all the info about the Army and what it is all about,
just click HERE. Hope to see you on the front lines
very soon. We need you.
NOX
ARCANA - THEATER OF ILLUSION
Theater of Illusion, Nox Arcana's 12 CD will be shipping out
by the end of the month. As always, we are looking forward to going on
another dark and wonderful musical journey with the help of Nox Arcana.
According to their website (that you can get t by clicking
HERE) this is what their
new CD is about:
"Welcome to the Theater of Illusion, the legendary stage of
magic hidden beyond the threshold of dreams and nightmares. Behold strange and
mystifying acts performed by phantom magicians and discover the dark secrets
that lie in wait beyond the veil of shadows. Nox Arcana invites you to
enter a realm of magic and dark fantasy to immerse yourself in a soundscape of
haunting melodies, mystical rhythms and pulse-pounding orchestrations."
HORROR HISTORY
This week, we're staying over in the UK and spotlighting
another important figure in British horror history, as well as helping a studio
grow into a world famous company. Just head over to our
Horror History page to find out more.
BLACKOUT REVIEW
We have posted our review of a recent movie that is coming
out next month called THE BLACKOUT. If you like movies with creatures,
then head over and read our full review. Just click
HERE.
TROLL 2 & BEST WORST MOVIE At the end of the month, at the Music Box Theater in Chicago,
they will be screening a very special double feature. On July 30th and
31st, they will be screening BEST WORST MOVIE, a documentary about the infamous
film TROLL 2 (1990), directed by Italian schlock master Claudio Fragasso, but
shot in Porterville, Utah. The film is so bad, that it has gained
legendary cult status, making a very popular midnight movie and bad movie geek
get-togethers. So much so, that some younger filmmakers decided to make a
documentary about this little film.
The documentary will be screening at 9:45pm on Friday the
30th and Saturday the 31st, with the actual film TROLL 2 being screened at
midnight. Cast and crew from the documentary are scheduled to appear.
But even if you don't live in the Chicago area, this documentary is on tour
around the states, having many screenings. For more information about the
movie and other screenings, just head to the official site by clicking
HERE.
For info about the Music Box Theatre and the screening, just
TERROR IN THE AISLES 6
While on the subject of movie screenings and festivals, we
just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that next month on August 14th
at the Portage Theater will be the Terror in the Aisles 6, featuring 3 movies: CREEPSHOW, Clive Barker's BOOK OF BLOOD, and TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE.
Director, actor, and composer John Harrison will be appearing in person at the
show. Not only did Harrison create one of my all time favorite movie
scores, CREEPSHOW, but he has had his hand in tons of genre films. He was
even the zombie in DAWN OF THE DEAD that gets the screwdriver shoved through his
ear! Plus going on to becoming a successful director, with films like the
other two films that are being screened besides CREEPSHOW.
But there is also a few new attractions that have recently
been added to the show. Clive Barker's original paintings from the Packer
Schopf Gallery will be showing in the lobby of the Portage Theater. Seeing
his artwork in person is reported to be completely different than seeing in a
book. So this is just another reason to come out to the show for a night
of fun and horror. Doors open at 7pm, with trailers starting at 7:30pm and
CREEPSHOW starting at 8pm. Tickets are available in advance for only $10
through brownpapertickets:
http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/116777, or will be $12 at the door.
There will be plenty of dealers set up (including us), and plenty more fun to be
had. Hopefully we'll see you there!
B-MOVIE CELEBRATION
And yet even one more movie festival that we want to bring
up. We've been wanting to make it the annual B-Movie Celebration that is
held in Franklin, Indiana, but just just make it. This year, it looks once
again like a great time. Even though that is getting close to our busiest
time of the year, it would be great to be able to go there, relax, and catch
some great movies the way they were meant to be seen.
It takes place on Sept. 24th through the 26th, and will
feature screenings of plenty of movies. Here are a few of the titles that
they will be screening: William Girdler's THE MANITOU (1978) & ABBY (1974),
DEATH RACE 2000 (1975), ROCK AND ROLL HIGH SCHOOL (1979), GALAXINA (1980), LAND OF THE MINOTAUR
(1976), SLIME CITY MASSACRE (2010), DEAD SNOW (2009), BUCKET OF BLOOD (1959),
William Castle's MR. SARDONICUS (1961) & HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (1958), VALLEY OF
THE GWANGI (1969), EMPIRE OF THE ANTS (1977), QUATERMASS AND THE PIT (1968), THE
RAVEN (1963), PIRANHA (1978), THE BLOB (1958), CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON
(1954).
But they also will have guests there like Bert I. Gordon,
Lloyd Kaufman, Daniel Roebuck, Tony Randel, Jim Wynorski, and more. This
year the B-Movie Celebration is honoring three filmmakers that made a impact on
the industry, even though they might not be that well known. They are K
Gordon Murray, William Girdler and Kroger Babb. If you don't know these
names....you should.
For all the details about the festival, head over to their
website by clicking
HERE.
NASCHY DOCUMENTARY
As we all (hopefully) know, Paul Naschy passed away near the
end of last year. But it seems that someone else has decided that more people
need to know about Naschy and his legacy. Luis Rosales and SciFi World have
produced The Man Who Saw Frankenstein Cry, a documentary directed by Angel Agudo,
about Paul Naschy and his work. Mick Garris is the host, and has input from the
likes of directors John Landis, Jorge Grau, actress Caroline Munro, and many
others, including Naschy himself. The documentary will premeire at The Sitges
Film Festival in Spain this October. Hopefully it doesn’t take that long before
it is available to his fans around the world.
MYSTERY PHOTO Our last photo was from Larry Cohen's THE STUFF (1985).
We figured if we used a shot of Michael Moriarty it might be a little easy to
recognize. So we found that shot that we thought might be a little
tougher. But it seems enough of you recognized it anyway. So job
well done, people. Here are ones that sent in the correct answers this
week: April J. Atwood, Hoby Abernathy, Craig J. Clark, Nancy Cremer, Mike
Dudley, Rick Hayden, Samuel Locke, David Schmidt, Justin Thaler, Gert Verbeeck,
and William Wilson.
Also, for those of you who don't send in their guess because
they might not be sure, send them in anyway. You never know, you just may
be right. If you send in the wrong answer, I'll email you back and let you
know it was wrong, but keep trying. If you don't hear back from me, then
you know you got it right. We love to see persistent horror fans.

WILDCLAW THEATRE Last week, we asked you to take a few minutes of your time
and help our friends at WildClaw Theatre in getting some much needed funds for
their Horror Theatre company. It's coming down to the final day and it's
getting very close. So if you haven't voted yet, please take a few minutes
and place your vote for them. EVERY SINGLE VOTE COUNTS and could help them
receive $20,000 in grants, which would help them immensely. For a small
company that has been busting their butts to bring real horror theater to the
Chicago area fans, they need all help and $$ they can get. So please,
click
http://apps.facebook.com/chasecommunitygiving/charities/261199553-wildclaw-theatre
and help support WildClaw.
And while on the subject of WildClaw Theatre, they are now
taking submissions for their third Annual International Festival of Radio Horror
Plays. We were honored to be one of the judges last year and it was a
blast.
The deadline is October 1st, 2010. They are looking for 10-minute radio scripts
that are "genuinely scary, imaginative, chilling, intelligent, suspenseful,
horrific or downright grotesque." They pick the 5 best scripts then
perform them live before an audience, using actors and live foley artist.
For all the information about this year's Deathscribe contest, just click
HERE.
Also, for Chicago area fans that want to have some fun and
support WildClaw Theatre at the same time, then get ready for their Monster
Bowl. The last two years, they've presented a Zombie Bowl, but this year,
they are opening up the guidelines to any and all monsters. It will be
taking place on Saturday, July 31st at the Timber Lanes (1851 W. Irving Park,
Chicago). More details will be coming from WildClaw, so keep checking
their website HERE
for more info.
HORROR HISTORY
Yea, I know we haven't posted an update in this section in a
while. But we're working to try and bring that back to a weekly feature
again. Mainly because we don't think there's anything more important as a
horror fan as to learning about the history of the genre.
So this time out we take a quick look at one of the female
stars of British horror. If you are a fan of Hammer, then you should know
her. Click HERE to get your new lesson.
NEW REVIEWS
We have posted several new reviews with this update.
First off, we have posted our thoughts on the soundtrack for the Italian film
NIGHT OF THE DEVILS. Head over to our Soundtrack Review section to read
them. To get there, just click HERE.
We have also posted reviews of several different film
reference books in our Reference Book Review Guide. To get there, just

MYSTERY PHOTO
Our last photo seemed to be another tough one. But at least this time we
did get a few more responses than last time. So a big kudos go out to Mads
Jensen, Erik Martin, and Mike Shields for naming the correct movie. Which
was FINAL TERROR, the 1983 film starring Adrian Zmed, Rachel Ward, Darryl
Hannah, and Joe Pantoliano. If you haven't seen it, it's well worth
checking out. Granted, the DVD leaves a little to be desired as far as the
quality....but still worth a look.
So here's our latest photo. Again, we're trying not to
get too easy again, but we'll see who can come up with the name of this little
favorite. Really packs a whallop in such a small package. Just click
HERE to send in
your answers. Good luck.

KRYPTIC ARMY - HALF WAY POINT
Okay Troops....we've successfully made it through the halfway
point in this year's missions. I want to thank all the members of the Army
out there for participating each month. I know I am having a lot of fun
hearing from each of you each month with what movies that you have chosen, as
well as your thoughts. I've got some more fun and interesting themes
picked out for the rest of the year, so we will keep that momentum rolling.
And we are definitely planning on continuing this project next year as well.
So at the end of this year, once we announce all the winners and prizes, we will
be starting all over again next year. So we hope that everyone stays with
us for next year's assignments as well.
SUPPORT HORROR THEATER!
Our friends at WildClaw Theatre need your help. Over the last few years,
they have been working extremely hard at bringing serious horror to the stage
here in Chicago. But now they need your help and support. I'll let
our good friend and WildClaw member Aaron "AC" Christensen explain the further
details on how you can help them, just by taking few clicks of your time.
Take it away, AC.....
Aaron
Christensen here....For the past three
years, WildClaw Theatre has been bringing live horror to the Chicago stage (as
well as bowling alleys, taverns and other Windy City locales) with fantasmagoric
productions of Arthur Machen's THE GREAT GOD PAN, H.P. Lovecraft's THE DREAMS IN
THE WITCH HOUSE, William Peter Blatty's LEGION, Scott Barsotti’s original zombie
drama THE REVENANTS, as well as their annual horror radio play festival,
DEATHSCRIBE.
All that horror requires money. However, this year, Chase
Community Giving programs will award $5 million in grants to 200 local U.S.
non-for-profit organizations. And folks like YOU get to
choose who gets the donations.Yes, for once, the asylum is
truly in the hands of the inmates. This is an opportunity
for the horror kids to let their voices be heard – if we can keep WildClaw in
the top 200, Chase will award $20,000 to a HORROR THEATRE.
Yeah. That's a WHOLE lot of stage blood.
Please give
WildClaw your vote and help us keep bringing horror to life, on stage and in
your face.It takes less than 60 seconds, doesn't cost a
thing, and each vote sends a big bloody message. But please
hurry, as the campaign ends soon!(Votes must be cast by
midnight, July 12, EST)
Yes, you need to be a Facebook member to
participate, but hopefully this won't be a problem for most of you.Again, it only takes a minute, and remember, while you are voting, there
are 100 other blood brothers and sisters out there with good intentions who are
not.We appreciate you taking the time and effort to keep
horror alive and/or undead.
HORRORHOUND WEEKEND...
EVEN MORE RE-ANIMATED
Continuing on their RE-ANIMATOR reunion, they are making it
even better. They are already celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Stuart
Gordon's RE-ANIMATOR, but now they are adding another reunion in the same
vein.....the 20th Anniversary of Brian Yuzna's BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR! So
adding to this movie's already guests of Jeffrey Combs and Bruce Abbott, they
will also be joined by Fabiana Udenio and the Bride herself Kathleen Kinmont.
This is starting to come together as an amazing reunion show for RE-ANIMATOR
fans. And I have a feeling they're not done yet.
For all the details of this show, just click
HERE.
FLASHBACK WEEKEND NEWS
It looks like Flashback Weekend will be back this
year....sort of. While they are planning on getting back to their regular
conventions next year, back in summer months (hooray for that!), this year they
are going to do something a little different. On September 10th & 11th,
they will be having a 2-day at the Midway Drive-in, in Dixon, Illinois.
They will be screening movies Friday and Saturday night, and will have vendor
tables set up on the drive-in grounds during the day. There will also be
celebrities announced, that will be introducing the films, as well as be
available for autographs during the day.
So far, they have announced Charles Band and his Full Moon
Road show will be there. They have also announced a screening of the new
Grindhouse Releasing print of EVIL DEAD. For up to date info, head over to
their website by clicking
HERE.
HORROR ARTIST CHRIS KUCHTA NEW WEBSITE
We meet Chris as a Chicago Fango show a couple of years ago
and was immediately impressed by his work. And since then, he has
continued to impress us. He has recently got his website up and running
that features tons of photos of his artwork. Head on over the to check out
the incredible pieces that he comes up with. He does a ton of conventions
throughout the year, so make sure you keep an eye out for him as well.
MYSTERY PHOTO
We didn't realize just how difficult our last photo was when we posted it.
Just like our photo from THE CHANGELING got more correct responses than we've
ever had, our pic from last week probably got more incorrect responses from
people trying to figure out where that clip is from. I got just about
every title out there that featured somebody melting, from STREET TRASH, to
INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN, to SLIME CITY, and many more. But there was only
one person this time that sent in the correct answer. And that was Erik
Martin. The film? It was John Hough's entry in the werewolf series,
THE HOWLING 4: THE ORIGINAL NIGHTMARE (1988). I know the whole melting
sequence threw everyone, but he was really transforming after he melted into a
big pile of goo. While that effects sequence was done pretty damn good,
unfortunately the rest of the movie isn't so much. So kudos to Mr. Martin,
as well as to all the ones that kept sending in their answers, some multiple
times trying to get the right answer. We love to see that persistence.
Shows dedication. Or obsession, but we don't care.
Our next photo might be another tough one, but we think
there's enough clues in it to help you narrow it down. Take a look and
good luck. Just click
HERE to send in
your answer.
6-27-10 UPDATE AFTER ALL
Originally, we didn't think we would have an update this
weekend since we were planning to be at the Cyphan show all weekend. But
as it turns out, we ended up packing up and leaving at 2pm on Saturday.
Why? Because I think there might have been 75-100 people that came through
the door at that point. So we didn't see the need to waste the rest of our
weekend staying there. It also doesn't help when the daily
admission price was $30! The daily price shouldn't have been more than
$10, then that might have brought more people through the door.
I know it was a first time show. I'm not expecting
record crowds for one of those. But what I do expect is the show to be
promoted, and I don't think it was. And the other really big problem that
I had in the promotion aspect of it was the complete lack of including the
horror element in the promotion. The guest line up had more horror names
than sci-fi and fantasy. But on their commercial that ran on the Sci-Fi
Channel made no mention of the horror aspect or the guests. Would it
really have taken that much longer to add that in there? Hell, even the
badges just said Science Fiction and Fantasy United.
I've been doing conventions for a long time and have been at
some amazing ones and not so amazing ones. If there were a good crowd of people
there and I still didn't sell anything, then I know it's not the crowd, but just
what I'm selling. That wasn't the case here. When the only 2 sales I
have on Friday and the first part of Saturday was to 2 different dealers, I know
this is not a good show. There just weren't any people there.
I don't know the official count, but it sure didn't look like more than 75
people total for the day and a half that I was there. So that's why we
packed up and came home. I know we got a few surprised looks when we
started to pack up, from the promoter to even some other dealers, but I wasn't going
to completely waste my weekend at this place.
So here's a little advice to anybody with thoughts of putting
on their own show. First of all, expect to lose money. If you think
you're going to make a profit on your first show, then not only are you crazy,
but then you're not spending enough money on advertising. You
have to spend more money and time on advertising. Because you can have the
best guest lineup in the world, but if nobody knows about it, it won't matter.
And I'm not talking about passing out a couple of flyers at some local film
fests. I'm talking about spending at least a year at EVERY film fest,
convention, and any tie-in event that you can be at getting the word out about
your show. Getting people to come, THAT is the first part of having a good
show.
KRYPTIC ARMY - JUNE
MISSION ENDING SOON
Okay folks, just a friendly reminder that the end of the
months is only days away. So if you haven't gotten your mission report
sent in, you might want to get on it. Thursday morning our new mission for
July will be going out and I think everyone is going to enjoy this one as much
as the rest. It may be even a little easier subject matter, though may
take you a while to find one that you haven't seen already. But there's
plenty out there, so it shouldn't be too hard. How's that for a clue?!?!
And if you're not a member of our Kryptic Army and want to
join, there's no time better than now. Just click HERE
to read all about it and where you can sign up.
HORRORHOUND
GUESTS UPDATE
It looks like fans of Stuart Gordon's RE-ANIMATOR are going
to be very happy at the Cincinnati HorrorHound show this November. They
have added stars Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Abbott to the show's lineup. But
that's not all. Making his first convention appearance is Peter Kent, who
played Herbert West's first attempted at animating a corpse. Kent's
appearance was hard to forget, not just being a muscular and naked re-animated
corpse, but also taking a bone saw through the back. Of course, Kent is
also known as a actor/stuntman, working quite a bit as Arnold Schwarzenegger's
stunt double on films like the first TERMINATOR films, TOTAL RECALL, TRUE LIES,
and many more. His performance in RE-ANIMATOR will make a nice addition to
this 25th Anniversary reunion of RE-ANIMATOR.
But they have also added two guests from THE CRAZIES, Chris
Carnel and Brett Wagner. Actor/stuntman Carnel also played the minor in
the recent remake of MY BLOODY VALENTINE (2009), while Wagner's face has been
all over the place in promotion of THE CRAZIES. Throw in Lloyd Kaufman
from Troma, and all the rest of the great guests they already have lined up,
this has all the makings of another great show.
For all the details about the show, just head over to

VAMPIRE REVIEW
We have posted our review of a new film (well...sort of)
called VAMPIRE. It was actually released back in 2002 under the title
DEMON UNDER GLASS, but is not getting a new title and a new release. Check
out our thoughts HERE.
DEL TORO FUTURE PLANS
As we posted before, we were pretty happy to hear that
Guillermo del Toro was not going to be directing THE HOBBIT, mainly because we
were anxious for him to get to some of other many projects that he has been
talking about. Collider.com posted this Q&A session he did at the recent
Saturn Awards about leaving THE HOBBIT, and what are some of the plans that he's
working on. Instead of writing the notes out, we thought we'd just post
the video itself and let you watch it. It's long, about 20 minutes, but as
always, del Toro is very funny and very entertaining to listen to.
Especially when he's talking about his Man-Cave that he has where he puts all of
his collectibles and memorabilia. And to top it off, he says that he's
actually having a real car made to match the title vehicle from the 1977 movie
THE CAR. This guy is my hero. So watch the video to see what he has
to say about his FRANKENSTEIN and Lovecraft project, along with many more.
DVD NEWS
It seems that THE EXORCIST is the latest classic film to be
announced for a special edition 2-disc Blu-ray release. This version will
have both the Extended Director's cut of the film (which I like to call the
"Where's Waldo" version), but will also have the original version. There
will be a lot of extras carried over from the previous releases, like commentary
by Friedkin, the BBC documentary The Fear of God: 25 Years of THE EXORCIST, and
much more. But new and exclusive to the Blu-ray release will be a new
documentary called Raising Hell: Filming THE EXORCIST, which will feature set
footage, camera & makeup tests, interviews with the director, the cast, writer,
and more. There will also be a new featurette on the locations in
Georgetown, where the film was shot. And lastly, there will be a
featurette where Friedkin and Blatty discuss the different versions of the film.
Not sure if these extras are going to get me to run out and
buy this new release right away, since I'm pretty happy with my original
release, before all that extra footage was thrown in there. We'll just
have to wait and see what the reviews say.
Another film that will finally be getting a DVD release is
Ivan Reitman's early film CANNIBAL GIRLS, starring a young Eugene Levy and
Andrea Martin. Shout! Factory will be releasing this at the end of
October, and no word on the extras. Sure, this isn't the greatest film out
there, but it is a lot of fun.
MYSTERY PHOTO
I guess I was right on our last photo being a tad bit tougher than our shot from
THE CHANGELING. Only got two correct answers this time. But
remember, even if you're not sure, there's no harm in sending it a guess.
I'll tell you if you're wrong, so you can keep trying. But kudos to Gert
Verbeeck and William Wilson for sending in the correct answer. And that
would be ANTROPOPHAGUS, the 1980 Joe D'Amato film starring George Eastman as the
cannibalistic title character. Been a long time since we sat down
with this movie and figured we were over due. There's a couple of scenes
this movie is famous for, and we knew if we used either one of those, it might
be a few more answers. So we went with a little more obscure shot.
But now on to this week's photo. This one shouldn't be
as obscure.....well..... As always, click
HERE to send in
your answer and good luck!
6-20-10 HAPPY 35th BIRTHDAY JAWS!
It was 35 years ago today when a film came out that
literally changed my life. I didn't get to see JAWS when it first hit the
theaters, but remember seeing the lines around the block when it did. But
a year or two later, it was playing again at one of my local theaters, when my
sister took me and a friend to see it. I might have mentioned this here
before, but that film gave me nightmares for weeks, every single night.
They were so real and so intense that I still remember them to this day.
Never before or since has a film so terrified me like JAWS did. So much so
that since that film, I have never stepped for in a body of water other than a
bathtub or swimming pool. Been to Florida twice and been on the
beach.....a mere foot from the water. Would not go in. Don't get me
wrong. I love the water. Just don't like what might be in there
waiting for me.
So even though this film traumatized me that much, it is
still one of my favorites. It is one film that is near perfect. That
might have to do with the actors more than anything. What a perfect cast
Speilberg had here. The real star for me though, was the late Robert Shaw
as the crusty sea captain Quint. When he gives his little speech about
being on the Indianapolis when it goes down, to me, is one of the most chilling
and frightening moments in cinematic history. So Happy Birthday JAWS.
And I still don't think it's safe to go back in the water. Ever.
CYPHAN CONVENTION NEXT WEEK
Okay folks, next weekend we will be at the Cyphan
Science Fiction, Fantasy, & Horror show at the Westin Chicago North Shore in
Wheeling, IL. The show runs from Friday the 25th through Sunday the 27th.
With horror guests like Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King and Ari Lehman from the
original FRIDAY THE 13th, as well as Stephen Geoffreys from FRIGHT NIGHT and
976-EVIL, and even Chicago's own Svengoolie will be there Saturday afternoon.
There is a very good chance (depending on how much beer we can get) that the
amazingly talented gore artist Putrid will be at our table on Saturday. We
do have some limited edition prints for sale as well as the Paul Naschy t-shirts
that he designed. As well as Cory Ulder, director of INCEST DEATH SQUAD
and the upcoming sequel!
For all the details, head over to their website by clicking
HERE and make sure you stop
by our table.
TERROR IN THE AISLES 6
While we missed the last TITA show, we are not
planning on missing this next one. Taking place at the Portage Theater in
Chicago on Saturday August 14th, they will be screening vintage trailers, the
short film WALK ZOMBIE WALK and 3 feature films: CREEPSHOW, CLIVE BARKER'S BOOK
OF BLOOD, and TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE. Plus, John Harrison will
be the special guest for the event. Not only did Harrison director BOOK OF
BLOOD and TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE, but he also composed the score for
CREEPSHOW (which is one of my all-time favorite scores) and DAY OF THE DEAD.
Plus, for you fans of the original DAWN OF THE DEAD, he was the zombie that got
the screwdriver shoved into his ear.
So make your plans now to attend this great event.
Advance tickets are only $10 (by clicking
HERE),
or $12 at the door. Either way, you can't beat that price for an evening
of fun and horror!
SOAPBOX TIME: TO BLU-RAY OR NOT TO BLU-RAY
Okay.....we did it. We couldn't take it any
longer and went out and bought a Blu-ray DVD player. Figured my birthday
was coming up in a couple of months, so what the hell. Plus, earlier last
week, I had placed an order for some Blu-ray DVDs from a site that has having a
huge sale, and ended up ordering Carpenter's THE THING, CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD,
THE WOLFMAN, and TRICK 'R TREAT.
So.....is Blu-Ray really all that and
more? Is everything so clear you can see the tiniest of details?
Yea...I guess so. Now understand this is just after watching one movie and
a few extras on a couple of other movies. Sure, it is pretty damn clear.
But has it blown me away? Not yet, as far as the clarity part. Sure,
you can see that Richard Dysart's character has a nose ring. But did that
really change anything about the movie for me? No. "Back in the
day", I can still remember putting in the laserdisc for TERMINATOR 2 and
noticing the difference, a major difference, between that quality and that of a
VHS tape. It really was like night and day. I have not seen that yet
with Blu-ray. But like I said, understand this is just after 1 day with
the player. So as we get more use to this format, check out more discs,
and even go back to compare them to the regular DVDs, we'll post more of our
thoughts if we start to complete be taken in by this new format.
BUT...the main reason I really bought one of these is because
of the extras, not the extra clairity. Since the studios are trying to
force the market and the public to go Blu-ray, a lot of the discs coming out now
seem to have all or more of the extras on only the Blu-ray editions. And
as a die-hard horror fan, it sucks that if you really want all those extras, you
have to go the extra distance. Bastards.
HAMMER HITS 75 YEARS OLD
Back on June 17th, 1935, Hammer Films released their first
picture, the comedy THE PUBLIC LIFE OF HENRY THE NINTH. It's amazing to
think that a small company just starting out would eventually go on to change
the face of horror from the '50s through the '70s. They made films that
are so good that they have lasted the test of time and are still as enjoyable
now as they were back then. And with all of these great titles coming out
on DVD now, it gives new viewers a chance to experience these amazing films
again and creating a new generation of Hammer Fans!
And while of the subject, Hammer Films authority Marcus Hearn
has a new book coming out this fall that is going to be a must for us Hammer
fans. Following up his Hammer Glamour book, this October Titan Books will
unleash The Art of Hammer: The Official Poster Collection From the Archive of
Hammer Films. This will feature the "very best and most iconic movie
posters produced for the Hammer studio." The book will also include rare
artwork from foreign posters from some of their most famous films. Being a
huge fan of poster art to begin with, this is one book that we are really
looking forward to. The has will have a retail price of $29.95.
STREETWALKER REVIEW
We have posted our review of a new film hitting DVD
next month. It's called RESURRECTING THE STREET WALKER and is a
pseudo-documentary about a young aspiring filmmaker who discovers an unfinished
horror film about a serial killer. The more determined he gets to
finishing the film, the deeper into obsession he gets. For our review,
just click HERE.
MYSTERY PHOTO
In all the years I've been posting these Mystery Photos, I can't remember a time
when I have gotten this much response. Here I thought I was pulling out an
obscure film that I personally just love and thought needed some more attention.
But then I kept getting emails after emails with not only the correct answer but
with comments as well saying how much they love this film. Brought a smile
to my face many times this last week. So thanks to everyone to
participated. Thrilled to see this film getting this much love. And
speaking of which, the film in question is THE CHANGELING (1980), starring
George C. Scott.
And here's the list of people that sent in the correct
answer. Major kudos to you: Hoby Abernathy, Craig J. Clark, Aaron Christensen, Nancy Cremer, Mike Dudley, Scott Finnegan, Dave Friedman, Ghoul Friday, Michelle
Hudecek, Mads Jensen, Charles M. Kline II, Eric Kuhl, Erik Martin, Amanda
Passmore, Steven Riola, David Schmidt, Wayne Teeter, Gert Verbeeck, and William
Wilson.
So while everybody is riding that winner high, take a long
hard look at our latest photo and see if this rings any bells. Just click

those answers. And as always, good luck.

DRIVE-IN
SUPER MONSTER-RAMA
Drive-in movie fans rejoice! On September 10th and
11th, DVD Drive-in presents this year's Drive-In Super Monster-Rama will be
taking place at the Riverside Drive-in, in Vandergrift, PA. This is the
fourth year they are holding this epic event, and like always, they have one
hell of a line up planned for this year. On Friday, September 10, the
features will be THE COMEDY OF TERRORS, THE OBLONG BOX, THE WITCHMAKER and THE
INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN. Then on Saturday the 11th, they will be screening
Hammer's FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN and FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL
(Uncut British Version), then THE BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW and DR. TERROR'S HOUSE
OF HORRORS. These are all screened from 35mm prints.

BEYOND
THE REALMS
Fellow HorrorHound Scribe and good friend
Jason Schneeberger has just launched a new website, called Beyond
the Realms, that features everything from movie and music reviews (both old and
new), news, tattoo art, and more. Head over to their site and check them
out. I'm sure they have something there that you'll enjoy. You can
get there by just clicking
HERE, or going to
www.beyondtherealms.com
We also have another site that was brought to our attention
that we found pretty entertaining. It's called
Mystic Skull, which is a
web-based magazine that covers the horror genre in books, films, music and more.
When we noticed an interview with cult filmmaker Ted V. Mikels and an article on
composer Ronald Stein, we knew we found another kindred spirit in the genre.
Just click on the banner below to get to their site.
HAPPY
50th BIRTHDAY PSYCHO!
One of our Kryptic Army Soldiers, Erik Martin, brought
this to our attention and thought that it needed to be pointed out. On Wednesday the 16th of this month, Alfred
Hitchcock's PSYCHO will turn 50 years old. Can you believe it? It
was 50 years ago on that date when Hitchcock unleashed Norman Bates into the
theaters. That film had a major impact on the horror movies from there
out, making the hidden side of man's darker side. Plus the fact that you
just never know how innocent your friendly neighbor might be or what he's doing
behind closed doors.
So Happy Birthday Norman and Mrs. Bates, and thank you Mr.
Hitchcock for creating such an incredible movie that we can still enjoy 50 years
later.
HORRORHOUND GUEST
UPDATE
HorrorHound has announced two new guests for their upcoming
November show. There's a lot of stuff that goes on behind-the-scenes on
movies that us, as viewers, have no idea the hard work that goes into it.
Sure, we're pretty familiar with the whole makeup artist game, and know the
challenges that is. But there are plenty of other talented people that are
going unnoticed. Now, and the Cincinnati show in November, you will have
the chance to ask plenty of questions to two people that helped make
GHOSTBUSTERS such a great movie.
Billy Bryan worked on GHOSTBUSTERS, wearing the Stay Puff
Marshmallow Man suit. But he has also worked on plenty of other genre
favorites like CHILD'S PLAY, ARMY OF DARKNESS (playing the Pit Bitch), and
SPECIES 2. Working as puppeteer, acting in a creature suit, or tons of
other applications, he is one of the guys who's work can often get overlooked.
Mark Bryan Wilson is another of the same. He helped create the Slimer
character from GHOSTBUSTERS, as well as working on films like BRAM STOKER'S
DRACULA, EVIL DEAD 2, TERMORS, and SPECIES.
So when you come out to the show, I'm sure these guys have
plenty of great stories to tell about the real workings of making movies and
what goes on off camera. For all the info about this upcoming show, just
MYSTERY PHOTO Our photo from last week was from the Spanish film THE BLOOD
SPATTERED BRIDE (1972), that features plenty of blood and nudity, like any good
Spanish horror film from that time. It's slightly based on Carmilla story,
but takes a few liberties here and there. But comes highly recommended
from us here at the Krypt. Kudos out to Hoby Abernathy,
Aaron Christensen, Mike Shields, and Wayne Teeter. Nice job guys...not an
easy one.
So let's take a gander at our latest one and see how easy
this one is. As always, just click
HERE to send in
those answers. And as always, good luck.
6-6-10 KRYPTIC ARMY - GODFATHERS OF GORE
For those out there in our Kryptic Army, you have gotten this
month's mission. I'm sure it will be an easy one as well as enjoyable one
for you to tackle. If you're not in the Army, it's never too late to join.
All you have to do to sign up is just click HERE to
sign up and we'll send you all the details.
CYPHAN SHOW
In just 3 short weeks, we'll be heading up to the north side
of Chicago, to the Westin Chicago North Shore in Wheeling, IL, for the Cyphan,
the mid-west's sci-fi/fantasy/horror convention. Their official site can
be reach by clicking HERE.
It is taking place on June 25th-27th, and for horror fans, they will be having a
30th-Anniversary FRIDAY THE 13th reunion with Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, and
Ari Lehman. Stephen Geoffreys from FRIGHT NIGHT and 976-EVIL will also be
there.
Hope to see a nice crowd of horror fans that come out and
support this new local show. The Chicago area needs one. We'll be
set up there, with a bigger spread than we've ever had, so please come out to
the show and make sure you stop by our table and say hello.
SOUNDTRACK REVIEWS & NEWS
We have posted our review of two different movies that have
been released in one 2-disc release. Waldo de los Rios did the score for
both WHO COULD KILL A CHILD? and THE HOUSE THAT SCREAMED, both great examples of
Spanish cinema. We have separate reviews for each of the films in our
Soundtrack Review page. Check them out.
And if you're a fan of soundtracks, there seems to be more
and more classic movie scores that are getting a soundtrack release.
Here's a couple more that we just stumbled upon. Lex Baxter had worked on
tons of great movies, like tons of stuff for AIP, like their Corman / Poe
movies, as well as BLACK SABBATH and tons more. One of the last horror
films that he composed was for the 1982 Philippe Mora film THE BEAST WITHIN.
This has been released in a 1000 copy release from Intrada. And La-La Land
Records has released Michael J. Lewis' score for Vincent Price's campy tribute
to Shakespeare, THEATER OF BLOOD. This is also a limited release, of only
1200 copies. To order this one, just head over to their website by
clicking HERE.
MEG FOSTER AT HORRORHOUND
Genre veteran Meg Foster will be joining the guest line up at
the Cincinnati HorrorHound show in November. Foster had been working in
the genre for years, and has appeared in countless films, such as WELCOME TO
ARROW BEACH (1974),
MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (1987),
THEY LIVE (1988),
LEVIATHAN (1989), and
STEPFATHER 2 (1989), just to name a few. Add that in with countless TV
appearances, Foster with those unique and gorgeous eyes, is a hard person to
forget.
DVD NEWS
Back in the early days of collecting videos, a video tape of
trailers was always a great thing to have. It was great for parties, or
just to throw in and let play. Especially if there were the classic
trailers like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, I DRINK YOUR BLOOD, and the ORGY OF THE
LIVING DEAD triple feature. Well now, one of the best tapes ever release
of these kinds of trailers is now coming out on DVD. MAD RON'S PREVIEWS
FROM HELL is coming out on DVD on September 14th from Virgil Films. We
highly recommend everyone picking up a copy of this. It makes the perfect
thing to throw in for you Halloween parties (or any party for that matter) and
will always get people's attention.
The 1978 film SLITHIS, featuring a great old fashion rubber
monster, was suppose to be released on DVD earlier this month by Code Red.
We're really hoping that it did come out since this is a great movie. But
there is no mention of it on their website and we're still waiting for their
release of RITUALS that was suppose to come out some time ago.
(NOTE: Just heard from one of our readers that the SLITHIS
DVD is in fact out and looks great. Going to have to add that to my list
now.)
For people with region free players, the German based Camera
Obscura has announced that they will be releasing (pun fully intended) Franco
Prosperi's WILD BEASTS (1984). This is a film is about a zoo who's water
supply becomes contaminated by PCP, causing all the animals to break out and
start attacking. You have a woman in a convertible being chased by a
cheetah, elephants running rampant at an airport, and sewer rats being set on
fire by a flame thrower. Unbelievable stuff here. There will be
several times when you're jaw will drop. No details on when this coming
out, but we'll keep you posted.
TURKEY DAY REPORT COMPLETE
We've completed our report on the last two years of our
Turkey Day Marathons. We have added them to our report page. So once
again, you can access them from our Features page, or
just by clicking HERE.
MYSTERY PHOTO
Much to the dismay of quite a few people, our photo from last week was NOT from
Gary Sherman's POLTERGEIST III, though I do have to admit that it was a pretty
good guess. But the shot is from Dick Maas' 1983 film about a killer
elevator called THE LIFT. But glad to see that quite a few people were
able to come up with the correct answer. Kudos goes out to: Hoby
Abernathy, Mads Jensen, David Schmidt, Mike Shields, Wayne Teeter, and Gert
Verbeeck.
Take a look at our next photo and see if it strikes a cord
with you. Good luck to everyone. Just click
HERE to send in
your answer.
5-30-10 DENNIS HOPPER - REST IN PEACE
The death train just keeping going. Although, after seeing photos of
Hopper a couple of months ago while getting star on the Walk of Fame, I really
didn't think he would be around much longer. He had been suffering from
prostate cancer for sometime and finally lost his battle with it yesterday
morning, at his home in California. While this Hollywood bad boy has
played in all kinds of films, he took several turns in the horror genre, usually
making a very memorable performance. He worked with several directors
known for their horror films, such as Curtis Harrington in NIGHT TIDE (1961) and
QUEEN OF BLOOD (1966), with Tobe Hooper in TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2 (1986),
David Lynch in BLUE VELVET (1986) giving us one of his most whacked out
performaces, with Stuart Gordon is his sci-fi / horror / action film SPACE
TRUCKERS (1996), and lastly with George Romero in LAND OF THE DEAD (2005).
Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.
TURKEY DAY REPORT BLOG
We are still working on getting this page completed, but we
have decided to open the doors early. It's not completely finished, but we
do have our reports from the first five years. We still have two more
years to go before we're caught up, but hopefully those will be filled in
shortly. So if you're curious as to what we put ourselves through every
year for the good of mankind and of bad cinema, then head over to our
Features section and look for the Turkey Day Marathon
link. Or you could just click HERE.
GODZILLA FANS
Chicago area fans of Big G will be happy to know that G-FEST
going to be held this July 9th-11th at the Rosemont Hotel at O'Hare, in
Rosemont, IL. Appearing at the show is actors Akira Takarada, who starred
in the original GODZILLA (1954), as well as five other Godzilla films, actor
Robert Scott Field, star of GODZILLA vs KING GHIDORAH, and authors Dr. William
M. Tsutsui and David Kalat.
But even if you're not interested in going to the convention,
the nearby Pickwick Theater will be screening classic Godzilla movies the whole
time. Here is what they will be showing: SON OF GODZILLA (1967),
GODZILLA vs MOTHRA (1992), GODZILLA 2000, GODZILLA X MEGAGUIRUS (2000), GODZILLA
vs THE SEA MONSTER (1966), and the original GOJIRA (1954).
For all the details about the convention and the screenings,
head over to the official G-Fest website by clicking
HERE.
TWO DVDS TO REMIND YOU WHY NOT TO GO INTO THE
WATER
Shout! Factory has been doing an amazing job with their
special edition DVDs that they are putting out. It making all of us horror
fans just drool with excitement. Even though Joe Dante's PIRANHA had
already been released on DVD, this new special edition is going to blow it out
of the water. First off, the new anamorphic widescreen presentation will
have audio commentary by both Dante and producer Jon Davidson. There will
also be behind-the-scene footage, bloopers and outtakes, still and poster
gallery, additional scenes from the network television print, as well as a new
documentary on the making of the film, featuring interviews with Roger Corman,
Dante, Dick Miller, Belinda Balaski, and more.
And if that wasn't enough, get prepared for a special edition
of HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP, that will feature a new high-definition transfer of
the uncut international version! Granted, from what I remember, it's only
one quick shot that was cut, but for us die-hard fans, that's enough to get me
to buy it. The disc will also feature never before seen deleted scenes,
trailers and radio spots, Leonard Maltin's interview with Corman on the making
of the movie, and a making-of featurette that has interviews with composer James
Horner, AD James Sbardellati, editor Mark Goldblatt, and more. Hopefully
they got to some involvement from effects guru Rob Bottin.
Both discs will be out on August 3rd, in both Blu-ray and
regular editions. Haven't heard if there is any differences between the
versions, so we're hoping not.
MYSTERY PHOTO
I have to say that I was pretty surprised and impressed at all the correct
answers that we got on last week's photo. While not that obscure, it's not
a title that a lot of people talk about. So it was great to see so many
people know it. The shot was from the 1976 Spanish film WHO COULD KILL A
CHILD? If you've seen the recent British film THE CHILDREN, this has a
very similar theme to it. And while not as graphic, this one still has a
strong impact. So kudos go out to the following scholars: Hoby
Abernathy, Aaron Christensen, Dave Friedman, David Schmidt, Mike Shields,
Kristin Wicks, and Will Wilson.
Now let's get to this week's photo. Take a good look
and see what you can come up with. Just
click
HERE to send in
your answer. Good luck.
5-23-10 BUSY WEEK
It's been a busy week here at the Krypt. Last weekend
we got a wee bit of water in our basement, which in itself wasn't the biggest
problem. But the water seemed to have "re-animated" something left behind
by our departed cat. Needless to say our basement, including the Kryptic
office, smelled a bit like a sewer. So we've been working throughout the
week, tearing carpet up, and all that fun stuff. We haven't even gotten to
that many movies this week either, which is a major bummer. But with a
little over a week left in May (Hint, hint to the members of the Kryptic Army),
we're planning on ending the month with a Memorial Day movie fest. Having
a 3-day weekend makes it real easy to waste one of those by just watching
movies! Well...sounds like a good idea to me at least.
TURKEY DAY BLOG COMING SOON
Regular followers to this site know of my yearly excursions
into the best of bad cinema that I call my Turkey-Day Marathons. I've been
holding these on the day after Thanksgiving since 2003 and realized that though
I do mention them on the site around that time, I don't have any real
documentation of each event, like what we watched and so on. So this week
I have been working on doing just that. I was originally hoping to have it
done for this week's update, but it has become something a little larger than I
had anticipated. But once it's finished, it will detail each year's event,
with what was watched and some personal notes and comments about the movie and
the experience. Bet you just can't wait, huh? Maybe we can inspire
everyone reading this to hold their own T-Day Marathon this fall....
PUTRID'S WEBSITE
Our good friend Putrid (aka Matt Carr) has finally gotten his
website up and running. His artwork has graced this website on more than
one occasion. His ability blows me away each and every time. He is
also the one that created the design for our Paul Naschy shirts (which are still
available...if interested, email me
HERE.)
He's a hardcore horror fan that comes up with some incredible work. Just
head over to his site, by clicking
HERE, for examples of
this work. Just a brief warning for the weak at heart, his stuff can get a
little brutal.
TERROR IN THE
AISLES 5
After a night of Zombies at Terror in the Aisles 4, Movieside
has announced their next show, Terror in the Aisles 5, taking place at the Brew
& View at the Vic Theater in Chicago, on June 11th. This time out, it's a
Killer Children Triple Feature, with screenings of IT'S ALIVE (1974), THE
CHILDREN (2008), and GRACE (2009). Plus, as a bonus, IT'S ALIVE director
Larry Cohen will be the special guest. The show starts at 8:00pm.
You can get your tickets online through
brownpapertickets.com.
MUSIC BOX SCHEDULE
Attention Chicago area genre fans! The Music Box
Theatre has posted their Summer lineup, and there's quite a few choice titles in
there. They are having a Ray Harryhausen series that will make any fans of
drool. Starting this weekend and running through the end of June, they
will be having matinee screenings of titles like JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS,
MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, ONE MILLION YEARS B.C., and more. There's nothing like
seeing the work of this master on a big screen.
They are also having several great titles in their Midnight
Movie series. Titles like [REC] 2, RAW MEAT, CANNIBAL GIRLS, TROLL 2, and
BIRDEMIC: SHOCK & TERROR (with director James Nguyen in person).
Other special engagements include Romero's latest zombie
flick, SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD starting a week long run next Friday, and one that
we're excited to see: BEST WORST MOVIE, a documentary on the film TROLL 2.
This starts July 30th, with cast and crew appearing at one of the screenings.
We'll post more details when we get them.
For all the info and details, head over to their website by
clicking HERE.
MYSTERY PHOTO
Last week's photo was from the classic film I BURY THE LIVING (1958), which
starred Richard Boone as the new caretaker who discovers that he might have the
power over life and death. We got quite a few responses this week, so it
does look like this film is still a pretty well known one. If you haven't
see it, it's available on DVD and well worth checking out. Kudos out to
Hoby Abernathy, Steve Bejma, Aaron Christensen, Craig J. Clark, Mike Shields,
Wayne Teeter, and Will Wilson.
For our photo this week, it may be a little tougher, but
think that it will be pretty easy to spot...if you've seen the movie.
Good luck, and just click
HERE to send in
your answer.
5-16-10 KRYPTIC ARMY MAY MISSION - HALFWAY
MARK
Okay folks, we are halfway through the month, which means you
only have 2 more weeks to get those missions in. The end of the month will
be here before you know it, so don't put them off too long!
SOAPBOX TIME AGAIN!
With the recent news of George Romero directing a remake of
Dario Argento's DEEP RED all over the internet, it's pretty hard not to notice.
Personally, I could care less. I haven't liked the last two zombie films
Romero has made, so if he wants to remake DEEP RED....let him. I've got
other stuff to concern my time with.
But what does bring a tickle to my belly about this whole
thing is that our buddies at Bloody Disgusting once again point out just how
knowledgeable they are about the horror genre. Click on this
link
(before he corrects it) and read the part where Mr. Disgusting himself describes
DEEP RED as it being "about a string of supernatural splatter murders".
Supernatural, huh? Once again....stay off the computer and go do some homework.
FRANK
FRAZETTA - REST IN PEACE
And here we go again. Okay, so Frank Frazetta might not
have been in horror movies exactly, but I don't think there's an horror
illustrator alive that didn't bow down to his work. Of course, his work
for the '60s horror magazines like Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella also helped
seal his contributions to the genre. His work will live on and be admired
by fans for years to come.
Franzetta passed away this last Monday after suffering a
stroke the day before. He was 82 years old. Our thoughts and wishes
go out to his friends and family.
B.I.G. BOOK REVIEW
We've posted our review of Bert I. Gordon's autobiography,
and must say that we're pretty disappointed. For our full review, head

JILL SCHOELEN ADDED TO HORRORHOUND IN CINCINNATI
Scholelen might not jump out right away as a genre vet, but
just by looking at her genre credits, she's definitely made her mark. From
being first girl to really take on Terry O'Quinn in THE STEPFATHER (1987), to
playing opposite Robert Englund in the very underrated 1989 version of THE
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, as well as CURSE II: THE BITE (1984), CHILLER (1985),
CUTTING CLASS (1989), POPCORN (1991), and WHEN A STRANGER CALLS BACK (1993).

COMPLETE
THRILLER COLLECTION HITS DVD
Years ago, back in the VHS and laserdisc days, Universal Home
Video a few episodes of this TV series that ran from 1960-61, but not even close
to the whole series. But now, the good people of Image Entertainment will
be releasing the complete series on a 14 disc box set. It will include on
67 episodes from this series, which of course was hosted by Boris Karloff.
Over the two years it played, the series featured tons of talent actors such as
William Shatner, Leslie Nielsen, Cloris Leachman, Tom Poston, Elizabeth
Montgomery, Ursula Andress, Richard Chamberlain, and tons more.
The box set will also contain 29 different audio commentaries
from the likes of Arthur Hiller, Ernest Dickerson, David Schow, Tim Lucas, Jim
Wynorski, Richard Anderson, Beverly Washburn, Ron Borst, and many more.
There will also be promotional and production stills, rare episode promos, and
isolated music & effects tracks for certain episodes. It will retail for
$149.98, which is a bit pricey, but remember that it is for 14 discs. This
is one collection that any fan of those early horror anthology shows must add to
their collection. Classic stuff here people.
BLOGS TO CHECK OUT
There are a few blogs that we check out on a regular basis
and figured it was about time to give them some props. Some are updated a
little more regularly than others, but I usually will find something
entertaining there.
Day of the Woman -
Brittney-Jade Colangelo is a young woman on a mission. Giving her feminine
sight on what's going on in the genre is always entertaining. And even an
old horror fan like me can learn something on her site. Kudos to that!
Frankensteinia
- Since we are pretty big fans of Frankenstein, his creature, and the like, we
were thrilled when we came across this extremely well done and informative site.
If you even the slightest fan of Frankenstein films and sub-genre, then you're
going to want to check this out.
Horror 101 with
Dr. AC - The amazing Dr. AC (aka Aaron Christensen) posts his thoughts on
the movies that he goes through (when he's not traveling the world), giving his
own special insight to the movies.
Shu-izms - Good
friend Bryan Schuessler's blog where he reviews movies, music, and whatever else
is on his demented mind.
Video Junkie
- Tom Simmons' brings back his wonderful insight of cinema to the internet with
this new blog version of his old site. Between him and contributor Will
Wilson, they will always be presenting some great articles on many different
genres and subjects. Highly recommend this one.
NEW LITTLE SHOPPE OF
HORRORS - MUMMY TIME!
The latest issue of one of the best fanzines ever produce on
Hammer Films is now out. Issue # 24 covers the making of all of the mummy
movies that Hammer put out: THE MUMMY (1959), THE CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB
(1964), THE MUMMY'S SHROUD (1966), and BLOOD FROM THE MUMMY'S TOMB (1971).
Of course, there's tons of other info and coverage that LSoH always has.
The new issue is now available for only $8.95 (+ $1 for postage in the US).
Or you could not only order this issue, but also pre-order issue # 25, which
will cover the making of BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW, due out this October. It
might not be a Hammer film, but it's a very important film from the British
horror genre, featuring the beautiful and alluring Linda Hayden.
Also, if you were looking to finally fill out your back
orders of this great fanzine, they are now offering ALL back issues in reprints.
They are only $13 each. The original issues go for big bucks on the open
markets, like eBay. So why pay all that money when you can get reprints
for a much cheaper price? I know we will be doing that to fill out the
issues that we're missing.

ARGENTO DOES DRACULA
Didn't see this one coming. According to Shock To You
Drop's site, from a report from Alan Jones, Argento has announced that not only
will he be making a version of Bram Stoker's famous novel, but that it will also
be in 3-D. It will be a period piece and will be a "faithful translation"
of the novel, with Argento writing it as well as directing.
Now, trying very hard to stay positive on this, it is going
to be very tough for me to get behind this. I hope like hell that it's a
worth while version. I really do. But I'm still wanting my time back
from watching his version of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. I guess we'll just
have to wait and see, with fingers crossed.
MYSTERY PHOTO
After last week's easy photo of HALLOWEEN, as I said, I set out to stump
everyone with the newest photo. Everyone, with one person in particular.
And that would be a very good friend of mine, Hoby Abernathy. Almost every
week, Mr. Abernathy sends in the correct answer for the photo. Even if he
has never seen the movie the photo is from, he somehow figures it out. So
while talking with another friend, it was suggested that I throw out a photo to
stump really this guy. And up until this morning, I thought we did just
that. But late last night, I got an email from Mr. Abernathy with the
correct answer.
So major kudos to you, Hoby Abernathy, for being able to
correctly identify this photo. We love and admire your dedication to
constantly Discovering the Horror! Even if it means completely wasting a
day at the computer. We salute you!
The shot is that of famed British actor Frank Finlay from
from film CTHULHU MANSION (1990), directed by Juan Piquer
Simón. This has not been released on DVD yet, and not really sure I'd be
waiting for it either. As much as I'm a fan of the work of director Simón,
this movie is just plain awful.
But let's take a look at our latest photo and see if we can
get a few more answers this week. Trust me, it's not as tough.
Honest. Good luck, and just click
HERE to send in
your answer.

KRYPTIC TOUR CONTINUES We
had a blast last week at the Horror Society show, and am looking forward to the
next stop of our 2010 Kryptic World Tour. Up next will be the Terror in
the Aisles film fest being held on Friday, May 21st at the Portage Theater in
Chicago, for a night of undead fun! They will be screening Romero's NIGHT
OF THE LIVING DEAD, Fulci's ZOMBIE and the Midwest premiere of [REC] 2.
For all the details, check out our posting below, or just click
HERE.
After that, the next show that we have planned is a new show
in the Chicagoland area called Cyphan. It's a show that is not just a
horror show, but also a sci-fi and fantasy as well. They are having a
FRIDAY THE 13th reunion with Ari Lehman, Betsy Palmer, and Adrienne King, along
with Stephen Geoffreys from FRIGHT NIGHT and 976-EVIL. Other guests
include Julie Caitlin Brown (from Babylon 5, Star Trek TNG, and Star Trek DS9),
Jewel Staite (from Firefly/Serenity & Stargate Atlantis), and Nicki Clyne (from
Battlestar Galactica). The show will take place on June 25-27, at the
Westin Chicago North Shore, in Wheeling, IL. Click
HERE to get to the offical
site.
After that show, we don't have anything definitely planned
until the fall when we hit Wasteland and HorrorHound in Cincinnati.
And speaking of Wasteland, they have updated their site with
their guest list for their October 10-year Anniversary show. Yes, it has
been 10 years since Pam and Ken Kish started their very own show. And
after 10 years, and 17 shows, let's all hope that they keep putting on what has
become the best show around, in our humble opinion. Not to say other shows
are a good time, but there is nothing out there like Wasteland. Plain and
simple. Never been to a Wasteland show, then make your plans now and see
what the difference is. For their fall show, taking place on October 1-3,
they have some returning guests that were voted back to return, as well as some
new ones. Here are a list of names so far: H.G. Lewis, Camile Keaton,
Reggie & Gigi Bannister, Josh Becker, Gloria Hendry, Bill Hinzman, Kane Hodder,
Lloyd Kaufman, Robert "John" Skipper, Carol Speed, Carter Stevens, Austin
Stoker, Tom Sullivan, and Jim Van Bebber. For all the details, head over
to their website by clicking
HERE.
The HorrorHound has a few guests announced for their
Cincinnati show, taking place on November 12-14. So far they have
announced Malcolm McDowell, Julian Sands, Danielle Harris, Jonathan Breck, and
Dick Warlock, with plenty more to be announced. Click
HERE for their
website.
DAVID DURSTON - REST IN PEACE
Another week and news of the passing of another person that had made an huge
impact on the genre. Writer/director David Durston gave us one of the most
memorable and infamous cult films ever made, I DRINK YOUR BLOOD. When it
was paired up with an older film that was re-titled I EAT YOUR SKIN, it became
one of the most famous double features in the history of the horror genre.
Not to mention that I DRINK YOUR BLOOD is a pretty wild and entertaining movie.
For years, there was that eternal quest to find an uncut print of the movie.
It had been shipped out to the theaters before the ratings board looked at it.
And once they did, they demanded some major cuts. So instead of havin gall
the prints shipped back, they told the individual theaters to make their own
cuts of what they thought was too much. That caused tons of literally tons
of different edits. Thanks to Grindhouse Releasing, they released the
complete uncut print on DVD back in 2002, so we can enjoy this movie for years
to come.
Durston passed away on May 6th, at the age of 89. We
had a chance to meet him a couple of times over the years at different
conventions. He was always a super nice guy and had some wonderful
stories. Our thoughts go out to his friends and family. Rest in
Peace, Mr. Durston. You and your work will never be forgotten.
HOUSE OF BLACK WINGS DVD RELEASE
This independent feature, filmed in Chicago, will be hitting
DVD on May 31st, from Sword & Cloak Productions. This is a moody and
atmospheric piece with a Lovecraftian feel to it. The DVD will feature a
"Making of" featurette, along with Wrap Reel, trailer, Photo Gallery, and crew
commentary. It will be available through Amazon.com as well as through
Sword & Cloak Productions site (swordandcloak.com).
We're usually not too fond of these lower budgeted films, but
were pretty impressed with this one. You can read our full review by
clicking HERE.
NASCHY SOUNDTRACK
I'm actually surprised that I hadn't been questioning this years before, but how
come we've never seen a release of any soundtracks from the films of Paul
Naschy? Well now that is all changing! Quartet Records has recently
recovered the tapes of some of Paul Naschy's films and sounds like they are
planning to release them on CD. The first in their collection will be
Howling of the Devil, from composer Fernando García Morcillo. This CD is a
limited edition of only 500 copies. So if you're even slightly interested,
then I suggest you order one right away, which is just what we did.
And if you're looking for a place to order it, I would highly
suggest heading over to Screen Archives (click
HERE for website).
They have a huge selection of soundtracks and good prices for the most part.
Every now and then you'll see a soundtrack with a huge out-of-print price tag
that just amazes me. But most the titles you'll find there are under $20.
We just placed an order for several new titles to add to our collection.
Check them out and I'll be you'll find a couple that you'll have to own.
MORE SOUNDTRACK NEWS
Fans of Full Moon's PUPPET MASTER movies will be excited to
hear that Perseverance Records will be releasing a 4-disc box set that will
contain the scores for all TEN of the PUPPET MASTER films, with scores by
Richard Band, Jeff Walton, John Massari, and Peter Bernstein. It will
feature liner notes by Brian Satterwhite and plenty of photos from Charles
Band's collection. The tentative release date right now is July 15th.
Stay tune here for more details, or you can head over to Perseverance's website
by clicking HERE.
DVD NEWS
I've said it many times before, and I'll say it again: This is a great time to
be a horror fan! It doesn't matter if a majority of what Hollywood is
turning out a bunch of crap, when we have some classic films getting released on
DVD and Blu-ray with tons of extras and even unrated editions. This is why
I say there is always something out there to watch. Shout! Factory will be
unleashing two films from Roger Corman's closet on July 20th that fans have been
waiting to happen for quite some time. And just think, there's more films
on their way! Now we're not sure if there is any difference between the
regular DVD and the Blu-ray, at least as far as extras on either film.
Let's hope that they are the same. But for now, let's take a look at what these
two editions have in store for us.
FORBIDDEN WORLD (1982) is about a genetic experiment that
gets loose on a research lab on a distant planet and starting running amok.
This will be a 2-disc special edition that will feature a newly re-mastered
theatrical version, but also an unrated director's cut. No word on the
quality of that print, but hopefully will be pretty decent. Other extras
include interviews with Roger Corman, the cast and crew, a featurette on the
special effects from the film, and trailers. The second disc will feature
the unrated director's cut, in full-frame ratio, with audio commentary by
director Allan Holzman.
GALAXY OF TERROR (1981) is about a spaceship crew headed off
to explore a strange pyramid that causes them to face their deepest fears.
With an all-star cast of Robert Englund, Sid Haig, Ray Walston, Erin Moran,
Edward Albert, and Grace Zabriskie, this may not be the greatest sci-fi/horror
movie out there, but it's a lot of fun. The new DVD will features
commentary with the cast and crew, and plenty of featurettes dealing with the
movie, the cast, and more. It will also have a photo gallery and original
script.
MYSTERY PHOTO
Yea, so I used a pretty easy photo this last time. Figured I'd throw and
easy one out there to see if everyone was paying attention. And it looks
like they were. Of course, the shot was from John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN.
I was thinking that maybe if I show something other than Michael Myers, it
wouldn't be as easy. But they came out of the woodwork on this one anyway.
So kudos go out to the following: Hoby Abernathy, Aaron Christensen, Craig J.
Clark, Nancy Cremer, Mike Dudley, Eric Englemann, Dave Friedman, Christopher M.
Hoss, Eric Kuhl, Erik Martin, David Schmdit, Gavin Schmitt, and William Wilson.
Now that everyone is feeling pretty good about themselves,
prepare to be stumped! This next one, though the quality is not that
great, I think will be a very tough test to you die-hards out there. So
get those thinking caps on, starting doing some on-line research, pray to those
Phoenician gods, or whatever you have to do, but let's see how many
can come up with this one!
If you know it, just click
HERE to send in
your answer. And good luck...you'll need it.
5-3-10 HORROR FANS
RULE!
Okay....so we're a day late on our update. We had
planned on getting this done last night, but it just didn't happen. From
not getting to bed until after 3am the whole weekends, we were pretty beat.
Or we're just getting too old to be doing this sort of stuff. Friday we
headed to the airport to pick up fellow HorrorHound scribe Matt Moore, who was
coming out for the Women of Horror 2 film festival. After an un-godly
delay at the airport, we finally headed our way into Chicago for the midnight
screening EVIL DEAD. Damn shame that there we're more people there to see
the film. Oh well.
Then on Saturday, we headed off again into the city for
Horror Society's latest film fest. The crowd started out slow, but as the
evening wore on, more and more came in. Always a fun time hanging out with
the Chicago horror fans who come out to support these events. Mitch,
Jessica, and the rest of the Horror Society gang all do a great job making this
a fun show and a fun place just to be hanging out and be a part of.
But the great thing about the evening was the raffle/benefit
that they were holding to help raise money for our good friend Kreepylady
Kristin. Between the raffles and the silent auction, they were able to
raise close to $1000. Granted, it's a small dent for the huge medical
bills that she has gotten over the last year, but at least it shows that the
horror community can come together to help their own when they need it.
Thanks to everyone who came out to support the show and the community.
And if whoever "borrowed" my driver side mirror while my van
was parked outside the Portage Theater that night, please return it when you're
finished with it. Thanks.
KRYPTIC ARMY CONFESSIONS
Just wanted to send a message out to all our Army members,
thanking them for their confessions. I know it wasn't easy, but we got a
lot of great stories from you sending in your movie choices. It amazed me
at some of the titles that had not been seen. And I'm glad that I could be
sort of a catalyst to make that happen. It's been my demented plan all
along! But I'm sure you will have just much fun with this months
challenge, though you won't get the same bewildered looks.
And if you're not a member of the Kryptic Army, there is
still plenty of time to join. Just click HERE to
get more info.
MICHAEL
PATAKI - REST IN PEACE
Last week we heard some news that was very disappointing on a
couple of different levels. The first and obviously one was when we heard
about the death of veteran actor Michael Pataki, who lost his battle with
cancer. But was also disappointing was the fact that he had died almost 2
weeks before I had seen any notice on the web. Very little seem to take
notice of the lost of this talented actor.
Pataki had played in so many films and TV shows, that there
is no doubt that everyone had seen him in action at some point in their life.
His genre credits included THE RETURN OF COUNT YORGA (1971), GRAVE OF THE
VAMPIRE (1974), THE BAT PEOPLE (1974), DRACULA's DOG (1978), GRADUATION DAY
(1981), DEAD & BURIED (1981), and HALLOWEEN 4: THE RETURN OF MICHAEL MYERS
(1988). But he also had roles in other films like THE ONION FIELD (1979)
and AIRPORT '77, ROCKY IV (1985), REMO WILLIAMS: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS (1985),
numerous TV appearances, and even directed the horror film MANSION OF THE DOOMED
(1976), which starred a very young Lance Henriksen in one of his earlier roles.
He was a familiar face that when we noticed him on screen, we
knew he always brought his A-game to the table, even if the budget of the film
was at the lowest, making him memorable in any movie. He will be missed,
and it's a damn shame that more people we not reporting this.
Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.
DARK NIGHT COMING
AT YOU!
One of the scariest made-for-TV movies made was DARK NIGHT OF
THE SCARECROW. And finally, the DVD will be coming out this September.
Starring Charles Durning, Lane Smith, and Larry Drake, this is one dark tale and
is one that you won't forget. The film has been re-mastered and is going
to look beautiful. Not positive about the extras, but I believe there is
going to be a commentary by writer J.D. Feigelson. We'll most those
details when we get them. But no matter what the extras are, make sure you
mark that on your calendar and add it to your To-Watch list. You won't
regret it.
TERROR IN THE AISLES 4 DIGS UP BILL HINZMAN
Bill Hinzman, the cemetery zombie from the original NIGHT OF
THE LIVING DEAD will be appearing at the Terror in the Aisles film festival this
month at the Portage Theater. For more of the details, scroll down to our
last update.
FRANK HENELOTTER FANS REJOICE!
There is a new website dedicated to the work of this twisted
filmmaker, Frank Henelotter. They are still filling out some of the pages,
but if you are a fan of his work, this is a great place to see some interesting
behind the scenes photos and information. Just click
HERE to be taken to
the Hotel Broslin.
MYSTERY PHOTO
Okay, since we used a shot that is from a classic (meaning if you haven't seen
this, now is the time to add it to your To-Watch list), we got a lot of
responses. It was from Mario Bava's BLACK SABBATH. So kudos go out
to the following: Hoby Abernathy, Aaron Christensen, Jason Coffman, Eric
Engelmann, Dave Friedman, Erik Martin, David Schmidt, Mike Shields, Wayne
Teeter, and Gert Verbeeck. Job well done, people.
Now lets take a gander on this one and see if you think it's
as easy! As always, click
HERE to send in
your answer. Good luck!

ONE B.I.G.
BOOK
The man they called Mr. BIG got that name for a reason.
Writer, director, producer, and visual effects artists, Bert I. Gordon gave us
such classic films as KING DINOSAUR (1955), BEGINNING OF THE END (1957), THE
AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN (1958), THE FOOD OF THE GODS (1976) and EMPIRE OF THE ANTS
(1977), just to name a few. He was known for having either gigantic
monster, over or undersized creatures, all running amok. They may not have
been the greatest made films out there, but they were always entertaining and
always made money.
When we talked to him a couple of years ago while he was in
Chicago at a movie memorabilia show, he mentioned that he was writing his
autobiography, which made us very excited, since we figured he had to have
plenty of great stories to tell. He originally told us that McFarland was
going to be putting it out. But it seems Mr. BIG went the self-publishing
route and released The Amazing Colossal Worlds Of Mr. B.I.G.: An
Autobiographical Journey. The retail price for the book is $25 for the 272
page paperback book. If you get it through Amazon.com, it's only $18.
Or you can order it through Gordon's own website (just click
HERE) and get it
personally autographed for $45.
We've already ordered our copy and plan on diving in as soon
as we get it. And I'm sure we'll be posting our review of it shortly there
after. As we said, good or bad, Bert I. Gordon played a very important
part in the horror/sci-fi genre and is one person not to be forgotten.
HORRORHOUND CINCINNATI
HorrorHound has already started to announce their guests for
their show on November 12th-14th, in Cincinnati. So far they have: Malcolm
McDowell, Julian Sands, Danielle Harris, Jonathan Breck. After there last
show, we know there's plenty more guests that will be announced before the show.
Make your plans now so you don't miss out. For all the details about the
show, just click
HERE.
MYSTERY PHOTO
Little surprised at this week's outcome. Really expected more people to
recognize this Spanish film since if you were of the male persuasion and watched
this film, you would never forget it. Especially if you were a young male
at that. The shot is from José Ramón Larraz's 1974 film VAMPYRES, starring
Marianne Morris and Anulka Dziubinska as the title creatures. Larraz took
on the vampire legend and put a very different twist on it. These
creatures were vicious, terrifying, and damn sexy too! If you haven't seen
this film, I do highly recommend checking it out. It has been released on
DVD (twice) and is coming out on Blu-ray soon.
The ones that did recognize the photo was Hoby Abernathy,
Aaron Christensen, and Mike Shields. Job well done.
And now let's take a look at our latest photo and see if this
gorgeous face brings back any memories? As always, click
HERE to send in
your answer. Good luck!
4-18-10 CINEMA WASTELAND REPORT
Believe it or not, not only did we survive one of the best
Cinema Wasteland shows, but we've actually got our show report done and posted.
Wonders never cease. Just like the Wasteland show itself. As always,
we had a great time there, geeking out at the cast of ZOMBIE being there.
Also a big thanks to everyone who stopped by our table and said they're enjoying
the site and our work in HorrorHound. Can't tell you much I appreciate
that. Makes all the work we do with it. So head over to our
Convention Reports in our
Features section to see and read about our latest trip to Ohio.
WOMEN
OF HORROR 2
With Wasteland already a week in the past, we're are looking
forward to our next excursion: Horror Society's Women of Horror 2 Film Festival,
taking place on May 1st at the Portage Theater in Chicago. They have
announced their lineup, which includes a 35mm screening of NEAR DARK.
There is also the benefit raffle that they are holding for our good friend
Kreepylady Kristin and have compiled an impressive pile of goodies. Head
over to the site by clicking
HERE for
all the details and we hope to see you there!
AFTER.LIFE REVIEW
We've posted our review of the new film AFTER.LIFE, starring
Liam Neeson and Christina Ricci. Very strange and one that will leave you
thinking. Head over to our Reviews section to
read more about it.
THE WOLFMAN SOUNDTRACK REVIEW
We have also posted our review for Danny Elfman's score for
the new WOLFMAN movie. One of the best things that we've heard Elfman do
in a long time. To read more, just click HERE.
KRYPTIC ARMY
For your recruits out there, you only have 2 more weeks to
get in your confessions for this month's mission. So far we've had a few
heartfelt entries, which I'm sure gave them some sort of inner peace. If
you haven't joined the Kryptic Army yet, there's still time. Just sign up
for our mailing list (the link is below) and head over to Kryptic Army page for
all the details.
DVD NEWS
While at the Wasteland show last week, we heard from Jerry
from Synapse Films that had recently acquired some films that American Hammer
fans have been waiting a very long time for. Later this fall, they will be
releasing VAMPIRE CIRCUS, TWINS OF EVIL, and HANDS OF THE RIPPER on DVD and
possibly Blu-ray. They will all have new high-definition transfers and the
extras are being worked on now. They have already interviews with Joe
Dante and Ted Newsom, amongst other things in the works. They will also be
putting out the 13-episode TV series HAMMER HOUSE OF HORRORS, that was
originally released by A&E.
All I can say is that it's about time that these classic
films got a domestic release. We can't wait.
MYSTERY PHOTO
Okay folks, it's been two weeks since our last update and Mystery Photo.
And it seems that this might have been a little easier than our normal ones,
since we got quite a few responses this time out. But don't give up if you
don't know these. Just remember those titles when you do find out what it
is and add them to your "need-to-watch" list. Our last photo was from THE
BURNING, with those pretty iconic shears. Kudos out to Hoby Abernathy,
Craig J. Clark, Mike Dudley, Dave Friedman, Andrew Heath, Erik Martin, Douglas
Rowe, Mike Shields, and Kristin Wicks. Nice job, people. Seems
slasher films are pretty popular out there.
But let's just see how easy this one is. It's not the
greatest pic, but I think you can make out what's going on to this poor fellow
and it's not a good thing. At least not for him. Good luck, and as
always, click

4-4-10 KRYPTIC ARMY
Thanks to all those who have been participating in our year
long Kryptic Army contest. It has been a lot of fun so far reading all the
different titles you have been coming up with over these first 3 months.
But with a new month comes a new mission. Those of you on our mailing list
know what lies ahead for this month. If you're not a member of the Kryptic
Army, all you need to do to participate is to sign up for our mailing list at
the bottom of this page. You can get all the details about the Army, the
monthly missions and everything else by clicking HERE.
Even though the year has already started, you can still join in and have a very
good chance to win one of the many prizes we will have at the end of the year.
HORRORHOUND SURVIVOR AND REPORT
We barely survived last week's HorrorHound Weekend. We
were amazed at the amount of people that were coming through the door the entire
weekend. Thanks to everyone who stopped by our table, both buying stuff
and just hanging out and talking about movies. It was a blast seeing old
friends and meeting plenty of new ones. We've got our review posted with
the few photos that we took at the show. I guess that's the bad part about
working behind a table at the show. But head over to our
Convention Reports for all the details. Or
you could save your time and just click HERE.
UPCOMING SHOWS
Next weekend, will be heading to Ohio for our bi-annual trip to the one and only
Cinema
Wasteland show. Now granted, we are always excited about going to
Cinema Wasteland, but this time out it's even something more special....a ZOMBIE
reunion! It's going to be yet another amazing time, as well as having the
chance to meet acting icon Richard Johnson. Not to mention the other great
guests they have lined up, including 3 more cast members from Lucio Fulci's
ZOMBIE. Plus there are several other guests from other zombie movies.
It's not too late to make your plans to head out and join us for the fun.
For all the details such as the guest line up and film screenings, just click
HERE.
If you're not able to make it to the Wasteland show, we would
highly recommend heading out to Chicago's Music Box Theatre for their Sci-Fi
Spectacular that is taking place from noon on Saturday the 10th until the wee
hours of the morning. They have one hell of a line up, one that I really
wished I could make it. The films scheduled to play are: THEM, PLANET OF
THE VAMPIRES, DARK STAR, FLASH GORDON, Q: THE WINGED SERPENT, LIFEFORCE, and
THEY LIVE. And if that line up wasn't good enough, how about having
writer/director Larry Cohen making a guest appearance? Like I said, I
really wish this was taking place on another weekend.
But then after Wasteland, our next show will be
Horror
Society's Women of Horror 2, taking place on May 1st, at the Portage Theater
in Chicago. This film fest will feature TRIPPIN (special guest director
Devi Snively), ALICE JACOBS IS DEAD (featuring Adrienne Barbeau), HEADING HOME,
I SPIT ON ELI ROTH, MONSTER INSURANCE, as well as a 35mm screening of another
film to be announced. These shows are always a lot of fun. Plus,
during the show, there is a Horror raffle to benefit a good friend of the Krypt,
as well as the Chicago Horror Community, Kreepylady Kristin. She has
always been a devote supporter of the horror community, especially in the
Chicago area, and is always there lending support. So now it's our turn to
show her the same dedication. From losing her job, to having to go through
two major back surgeries (all without insurance), Kristin went through hell last
year. So there will be plenty of items in the raffle, as well as a place
for cash donations. All will be helpful of getting her back on her feet.
For more information about the show, just click the link above. Hopefully
we'll see you there!
Another show that we just heard about that is another local
one for us, is the Cyphan convention. It will be held on June 25th-27th,
at the Westin Chicago North Shore, in Wheeling, IL. The guest line up
includes Nicki Clyne, Jewel Staite, Julie Caitlin Brown, Stephen Geoffreys, and
a 30 Year reunion of FRIDAY THE 13th with stars Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, and
Ari Lehman. For more information about the show, head over to their
website by clicking HERE.
ROTLD
HISTORY BOOK
Of course, being huge fan of reference books as well as Dan
O'Bannon's RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, we were thrilled to hear that there is
going to be a book on the history of this film series. Written by
Christian Sellers and Gary Smart, THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF THE RETURN OF THE
LIVING DEAD will be published this October by Plexus Publishing. The
288-page book will feature forward by actor Brian Peck and an introduction by
Brian Yuzna, who produced & directed ROTLD 3. The retail for this book is
going to be $24.95, but you can pre-order it through Amazon for much less.
SLASHER IMPROV
For Chicagoland horror fans, the Gorilla Tango Theatre will
be having a fully-improvised long-form show in the style of slasher films, all
based on audience suggestions. I know this has got me pretty curious.
The shows take place every Friday night at 11:30pm, starting on May 7th, and
running for the whole month of May. Tickets are $12.
For more information on the Gorilla Tango Theatre, click
HERE to get to their
website.
RED DEATH STUDIOS
One of the great things about going to all of these
conventions over the years, is meeting new people. At this last
HorrorHound show, we met the guys from Red Death Studios which make some amazing
t-shirts and work shirts. We picked up an awesome SHOCK WAVES work shirt
that has the poster art on the back, along with the title on the front pocket.
They had a great variety of movie titles on their shirts, all of them looking
great. I know we'll be picking up some more of their stuff the next time
we see them. Of course, you can also order their stuff through their
website (just click
HERE), or at least can check out the great designs they use. Of
course, telling them that we sent you there would be nice too....
DVD NEWS
Once again, somebody from the makers of Blu-Ray must be paying somebody off at
the studios. With the release of THE WOLFMAN remake coming out on June
1st, it looks like if you don't have a Blu-Ray player, the only extras you're
going to be getting are the deleted and extended scenes. It's reported
that all the other extras are for the Blu-Ray only. And for that, I could
only say....Damn you to HELL! It does seem that both versions with that
the theatrical cut and the director's cut. But as for the Blu-Ray extras,
it consists of tons of featurettes: Return of the Wolfman, The Beast Maker,
Transformation Secrets, The Wolfman Unleashed, and Werewolf Legacy: Lore and
Legend. There will also be two alternate endings that is only available on
the Blu-Ray. Once again....Bastards!
Also making it's first appearance on Blu-Ray will be Roger
Corman's DEATH RACE 2000 from Shout! Factory. Even though it was already
released twice before on DVD, this one is going to be one hell of a special
edition. There's no details if all these extras are going to be on both
versions or just the Blu-Ray, and it looks to just run over the last special
edition DVD release. It will have a new anamorphic widescreen transfer in
hi-def from the inter-positive film element. It has the audio commentary
of Corman and star Mary Woronov, but also a new commentary with assistant
director Lewis Teague and editor Tina Hirsch. Then there are tons of
featurettes on different aspects of the film, from one on the costume designer
Jane Ruhm and her work on this and other Corman films, to art direction and
design of the cars with B.B. Neel, James Powers, and Dean Jefferies, interview
with the composer Paul Chihara, and much more. When we get more details as
to what is going to be on what edition, we'll be sure to post it here.
Then Shout! will also be releasing new editions of PIRANHA
(rumored to a 2-disc edition), GALAXY OF TERROR, ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS,
NOT OF THIS EARTH, HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP, STARCRASH, and BATTLE BEYOND THE
STARS. Can't wait.
Dark Sky Films will be re-releasing one of my favorite cult
films, HORROR HOSPITAL. It was released quite some time ago by Elite
Entertainment and not sure of what process they did for their release. But
the Dark Sky one is going to have a new HD transfer from the original 35mm
camera negative. It will also feature audio commentary by producer Richard
Gordon and author Tom Weaver. If you haven't seen this movie, it's a
blast. Cheesy, but entertaining.
STAG NIGHT REVIEW
We have posted our review of the film STAG NIGHT, located in
our Reviews section...where else. This is a cross between HILLS HAVE EYES
and DEATH LINE, but with the cinematographer looking like he's got a bad case of
Parkinson's.
NEW NOX ARCANA COMING
Nox Arcana is back with new album coming out this summer,
entitled Theater of Illusion. According to their website, the release will
let us "Enter the mysterious world of dark magic and diabolical illusions as you
explore the shadows of an old abandoned theater that harbors restless spirits
from the past." Like all of their work, we know we are in for a fun and
dark ride into a magical musical soundscape. Can't wait. For more
information about Nox Arcana, head over to their website by clicking
HERE.
MYSTERY PHOTO
I think we fooled a lot of people with our last photo since it sure did look
like something from Hammer. It was British, but didn't come from the
studio that dripped blood. Instead, it was a shot from the BBC's 1977
version of COUNT DRACULA, staring Frank Finlay, Susan Penhaligon, and Louis
Jourdan as the Count. Kudos out to Hoby Abernathy and Dave Friedman for
identifying the correct movie. Nice job guys. That was a tricky one.
Which brings us to our latest photo. Take a look at it
and see if you can guess this one. Good luck, and as always, click
HERE to send in
your answer.

HORRORHOUND NEXT
WEEKEND
Since we will be in Indy next weekend for the
HorrorHound
convention, we probably won't have an update next weekend. But we will try
to post something on the following Monday. This will be the first real
convention of the year and we are chomping at the bit for it to get there.
We are looking forward to a weekend of hanging out with other horror-minded
fiends. It's always a good time, and I think this one is going to be even
better. From just the huge guest list they have, as well as all our usual
friends that will be coming to the show. It's going to be a non-stop
juggernaut of a good time. Can't wait! If you're coming, don't
forget to stop by our table!
KRYPTIC ARMY
And speaking of which, just as a reminder, there's only a
little over a week left folks for this month's mission. So don't wait too
long before sending in those reports. We have been getting quite a few
titles sent in that even I needed to add to my list of "to-watch" films.
BATTLE OF THE LIVING DEAD DVDs!
A few updates back, we posted some news about the upcoming special edition DVD
release from Blue Underground of Lucio Fulci's CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD (aka
GATES OF HELL) on May 25th. BU is releasing a regular DVD edition, as well
as a Blu-Ray edition, which has more features. Both releases feature the
following:
The Making of CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD - Interviews with Star Catriona MacColl,
Co-Star Michele Soavi, Production Designer Massimo Antonello Geleng, Assistant
Makeup Effects Artist Rosario Prestopino, Special Effects Artist Gino De Rossi,
Cinematographer Sergio Salvati, and Camera Operator Roberto Forges Davanzati
English Trailer, Italian Trailer, and Radio Spots/Still Gallery
The Blu-Ray version will feature:
Poster and Still Gallery, called Marketing of the Living Dead,
Interview with Catriona MacColl
Interview with Giovanni Lombardo Radice
Cast and crew talk about working with Fulci.
There's no running times listed for these interview
featurettes, so we're hoping they are more than 10 minutes. I would hope
so, since they are calling them featurettes, and you that have to pay an extra
$15 for the Blu-Ray edition.
But in the UK, Arrow Video is putting out a version on DVD
and Blu Ray on May 24th that just looks amazing. We're not positive if all
of these features are on both releases or just the Blu-Ray, but we'll keep you
posted. But none the less, these extras are pretty damn impressive.
Take a look:
Comes with four different artwork sleeves that you can pick your favorite.
A double-sided poster
Six postcards featuring different poster art from different countries
A new booklet by Calum Waddell called Fulci of the Living Dead, which
features exclusive interviews with long time effects artists Sergio Stivaletti,
actors Carlo De Mejo & Ian McCulloch, Fulci's daughter Antonella, and others,
giving a inside look at Lucio Fulci.
Audio commentary by actor Giovannie Lombardo Radice (aka John Morghen)
Audio commentary by Catriona MacColl
The Many Lives and Deaths of Giovanni Lombardo Radice - A 50 minute documentary
giving a an extensive biography on the actor, where he gives his fans an
overview of his most famous films.
Introduction by actor Carlo De Mejo
Carlo of the Living Dead - 17-minute featurette where De Mejo talks about his
work on this film and working with Fulci.
Penning Some Paura - Dardano Sacchetti talks about his work on writing this
film.
Dame of the Dead - Catriona MacColl talks about her role in the film.
Q&A Session at the Glasgow Film Theatre featuring Catriona MacColl and Giovanni
Lombardo Radice after a recent screening.
I know a lot of horror fans out there already have region
free players (and I believe that Blu-Ray doesn't have region coding, but may be
wrong), but in either case, it's going to be a tough decision to figure out
which release to pick up. Of course, if you were to ask me, I would just
get both. Too many goodies in there to pass up either. Besides, what
else were you going to spend that money on? Food? Bills?
DARK NIGHT DVD
In other DVD news, JD Feigelson notified HorrorHound that VCI
Entertainment will be the one releasing his 1981 TV movie DARK NIGHT OF THE
SCARECROW on DVD this fall. The DVD will be fully restored and re-mastered.
No more of those shabby looking tape transfers. This is one title that we
are very anxious to see all cleaned up. And just in time for Halloween too!
HAMMER NEWS
Years ago, Wayne Kinsey started a magazine called The House
That Hammer Built. If you were a fan of the famous British studio, then
these magazines were filled with tons of great info. Unfortunately, since
they were a British publication, they weren't the easiest to get a hold of at a
decent price. But since then, Kinsey has been working hard on giving
Hammer fans this same dedication and information in book form. His first
two books gave us detailed information about two different periods for Hammer
Films: The Bray Studio Years and Elstree Studio years. Both books
are filled to the brim with tons of information about the studio, the films, and
the people who made them. Last year, he published Hammer Films: A Life in
Pictures - The Visual Story of Hammer Films, which was a coffee table size book
that was filled with behind the scenes shots of the studio, many of them never
before published.
Well, now Kinsey is working on yet another book on Hammer,
doing something that we here at the Krypt have been working on doing for the
last 10+ years. Giving credit to those men and women behind these great
films. His latest book is called Hammer
Films - The Unsung Heroes: The Team Behind the
Legend. Being published by Tomahawk Press, the book give "An
oral history detailing the fascinating biographies of Hammer’s key players, many
telling their stories for the first time in all new interviews specially
commissioned for this book". Obviously, we can't wait.
WRONG SIDE OF ART
If you're looking to see some incredible poster art, then
head over to this website: The Wrong Side of Art. But be prepared to lose
some time there, since you will find yourself browsing the many different images
from tons of different movies. They have posters from all over the world,
showing some incredible artwork, as well some really bizarre ones as well.
You want to see what real poster art looks like? Before Hollywood sucked
all the life and creativity out of them? Just click
HERE.
MYSTERY PHOTO
Our last photo was one of those fun giant bug movies from the '50s, though it is
a little harder to come by these days. It was from the 1958 film MONSTER
FROM GREEN HELL. It had gotten a DVD release from Image back in 2001, but
is a little tougher to come by these days. It's one of those movies that
we always seen stills from, but never had the chance to see it. Well, if
you have seen it, then you know that the giant wasps in there are pretty
amazing, but that is only a very small part of the movie. The rest of it
is like watching paint dry. Not to say that it's not a fun nostalgic
movie, but you're going to be way more entertained by something from Bert I.
Gordon.
Anyway, congrats go out to Hoby Abernathy, Mads Jensen, and
Mike Shields for correctly identifying the movie. Now lets take a look at
our new photo and what we can come up with. Click
HERE to send in
your answer. And as always, good luck.

A LITTLE RANT FOR A THURSDAY
Okay, we try not to point fingers at other websites or get
into the whole mud-slinging thing, because mainly what’s the point? But over
the years, as I’ve been running my own site, I always found it humorous when
some sites get an “exclusive” interviews, or that some important person in the
industry contacted them, but then they seem to have the same quotes or news that
every other site out there has as well. Could it be that they just got the same
press release that thousands other did? But I digress.
We try to scan many different websites out there looking for
news that we feel that it’s important enough for us to post on our site. That’s
why you’re not going to see stuff on TWILIGHT and a post every day on the new
NIGHTMARE remake. We’ll leave all that puff-piece journalism to the bigger
sites.
Which brings me to why I’m writing this. Today I come across
a news post about the newly revamped Hammer Films and some possible titles from
their past that they might be remaking or re-imagining. The site mentioned
Bloody Disgusting had more details on their site, so I went there for more
info. The article was written by Mr. Disgusting, which I believe is the head
honcho at the site. Now granted, all of the same information from the press
release had already been posted on FearNet.com’s site by Joseph McCabe back on
March 5th, but there was some new information that Mr. Disgusting
gave us.
One of the titles mentioned by Simon Oakes, CEO of Hammer
Films, in the B-D article that Hammer might revisit was the character of Kronos,
from the 1974 film CAPTAIN KRONOS VAMPIRE HUNTER. The B-D article then goes
into a full paragraph explaining the details of the 1957 science fiction film
KRONOS, which is about an alien robot. They even have the poster of the
movie in the article!
So obviously he got the wrong movie. What’s the big deal, right? Everyone
makes mistakes. Sorry Mr. Disgusting, but I have to call you out on this one.
For someone running the site that is your “#1 Source for Horror”, you’d think
they might know what they were talking about. And we’re not talking about some
obscure movie here either. Sure, this might be a little anal of me and a little
of the “grumpy old man” syndrome that I’m developing, but it’s because of things
like this is what caused me to contract it in the first place!
It all comes down to what you know. We fans of the genre are
always learning, and should never stop. But when you put yourself in a place of
authority - and claiming that you are the #1 source for horror is doing just
that - then you better know your shit. So here’s a little advice, Mr.
Disgusting: Instead of worrying about posting little news bits every 10 minutes
about the new TWILIGHT trailer hitting the web, or posting the latest pics of
Freddy from the new NIGHTMARE, why don’t you take a little time and actually
learn more about the genre you’re supposed to be promoting.
The posting on the site has already been updated with the
mistakes taken out. Hopefully he's at least he’s learned one thing today.
Of course, I had copied the page and saved it. So if anybody would like to
see the original post, just let me know. I'd more than happy to send it to
you.
3-14-10 KRYPTIC WORLD
TOUR 2010 APPROACHES!
In a short two weeks, we'll be heading off to Indianapolis
for the HorrorHound Weekend, which will officially start our 2010 World
Domination Tour! They have one incredible guest lineup, with icons like
George Romero and Clive Barker, as well as names like Sid Haig, David Hess, Doug
Bradley, John Harrison, William Malone, and many others. Of course, let's
not forget to mention the chance to see the uncut version of Barker's NIGHTBREED,
as well as a small reunion of the films stars and director. For all the
details about the show, like the complete guest lineup, and show details, just
Then two weeks after that show, we will be heading to Ohio
for another Cinema Wasteland extravaganza! And while any Wasteland show is
always worth heading to, this one is even more special for me (and a lot of
fans) since they are having a ZOMBIE reunion, with 4 actors from Fulci's
classic: Ian McColluch, Al Cliver, Richard Johnson, and the iconic zombie from
the poster, Ottaviano Dell'Acqua. Granted, these guys were in tons of
other great films as well, making them even a bigger draw.
Of course, the Wasteland land crew didn't just stop there,
but also invited quite a few other undead guests, like Bill Hinzman, Sharon
Ceccatti-Hill, Jim Krut, Beatrice Ring, Kyra Schon, Tom Savini, and Howard
Sherman.
There is no show out there like Cinema Wasteland. If
you have never attended on and were just waiting for an excuse to give the show
a try, this would be the one. For all the details about this show, just
If you are planning on coming out to either of these shows,
make sure you stop by our table and see us. We love meeting our readers.
NASCHY T-SHIRT DEBUTS AT
HORRORHOUND INDIANAPOLIS
We will also have our Paul Naschy T-shirts at the HorrorHound
Indianapolis
show, featuring the amazing artwork from the uber-talented Putrid, that
we mentioned in a previous posting. They will be priced at only $15, so
you can proudly show your worship for one of the most iconic figures in the horror
genre, Paul Naschy. So if you're interested, make sure you pick them up
right away since we only have a limited supply of them.
CON-TAMINATION TO INFECT ST.
LOUIS
It seems that the midwest will be having another convention,
this time hitting St. Louis. On April 30th through May 2nd, there will be
St. Louis' first Horror, Sci-Fi, & Pop Culture Convention. Their guest
lineup includes a DAY OF THE DEAD 25th anniversary union, a NIGHT OF THE LIVING
DEAD reunion, Belinda Blaski, William Forsythe, adult film star Seka, Brinke
Stevens, Harry Manfredini, Victor Miller, Ari Lehman, and more. For all
the info about the show, head over to their website by clicking
HERE.
SCI-FI SPECTACULAR AT MUSIC
BOX THEATRE
Even though we are going to be at the Cinema Wasteland show,
if you're in Chicago area and can't make it Ohio, then head over to the Music
Box Theatre for a 14+ hour movie marathon, featuring some great movies.
They will also have special guest writer/director Larry Cohen appearing!
For more details, just click
HERE.
LEGION TRAILER
With WildClaw Theatres latest production opening tomorrow,
you can view the trailer for the play by clicking
HERE.
For more details, click
HERE to get to WildClaw's website.
EVIL DEAD COMES
BACK TO THE THEATERS
Thanks to the wonderful guys at Grindhouse Releasing, you
will be able to see the original EVIL DEAD in the theaters! I don't have
any details yet, but if Grindhouse Releasing is putting it out, one can only
assumed that they have cleaned up the movie, which means its going to look
incredible and better than you've ever probably seen before. For Chicago
fans, it will be playing at the Music Box Theatre on April 30th & May 1st.
For everyone else, head over to Grindhouse's website, by clicking
HERE, and click
on the EVIL DEAD link. There will be a complete listing of dates and
theaters.
Also for Chicago area fans, the film is also scheduled to
play at the Midway Drive-in Theater in Dixon Illinois on September 10th & 11th.
What a great way to experience EVIL DEAD then at a Drive-in Theater.
AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE
And while on the subject of Grindhouse, there is a new
feature length documentary coming out called American Grindhouse, which
"explores the hidden history of the American exploitation film". Just from
seeing the trailer, this looks to be an amazing time. Head over to the
website by clicking
HERE, where you can not only see the trailer for the documentary, but also
trailers for the types of films they are talking about. Right now, it
seems to be making a few stops at some film festivals, but nothing has been
announced as far as a DVD release. Hopefully the film will have a bigger
run at other film fests.
MYSTERY PHOTO
Our last photo was a little bit more obscure title, but those who grew up in the
'80s video boom, this was one title that hit the shelves and was always a fun
time. And all these years later, it's still a good time. The shot is
from the 1988 film THE NEST, featuring flesh eating cockroaches, and even
mutated cockroach monsters. Can't go wrong there! Well done to Hoby
Abernathy, Mike Shields, Gert Verbeeck, and Will Wilson for sending it the
correct answer.
This week, we're going old school, to those old black and
white classics. Though this one isn't as well known as some of the other
classics. So we're going to try and change that. So take a good look
and see if you can recognize the....creature featured in this week's photo.
Good luck, and as always, click
HERE to send in
your answer.
3-07-10 WILDCLAW's LEGION
COMES TO THE STAGE Next weekend, Chicago's own horror theater group, WildClaw
Theater opens their world premiere adaptation of William Peter Blatty's LEGION,
which is the sequel to the THE EXORCIST. Playing at the Viaduct Theatre ,
it opens on March 15th and runs through April 18th. Shows are Thursday
through Saturday at 7:30pm, and on Sundays at 3:00pm. Directed by Anne
Adams, the story from THE EXORCIST continues. Imagine a crime
procedural....with demons.
For more information about the show, and about WildClaw
Theatre, just head over to their website by clicking
HERE. Hope to
see you there.
KRYPTIC

late. All you have to do to join in is sign up for our mailing list (at
the bottom of this page) and you will be included on the Monthly Mission
Challenges. There will be prizes at the end of the year for many of the
people who participate. The longer you do, the more chances you have of
winning. For all the details, head over to our Kryptic Army page, by
clicking HERE. Hope to see you on the front lines!
MYSTERY PHOTO
Kudos out to Hoby Abernathy, Aaron Christensen, David Schmidt, and Mike Shields
for recognizing our last photo from the 1987 film ANGUISH. Yes, as some
pointed out, it was my little tribute to star Zelda Rubinstein, who had recently
passed away. If you haven't seen this movie, I highly recommend it.
Just don't read anything about it before seeing it, just watch it
Our photo this week is going to be another tough one, but if
you're a fan of bizarre mutated monsters, even when they can be a real pest,
then you might get this one....even with those hints. Good luck, and as
always, click
HERE to send in
your answer.

camera, but has a huge impact of what we see on the screen. Head
over to our Horror History for this week's lesson.
2-28-10 KRYPTIC ARMY -
ANOTHER MISSION COMPLETED
With tomorrow being March 1st, I want to again thanks
everyone who has participated in our Kryptic Army. We seem to be getting a
good response and everyone seems to be having fun picking out the movies they're
going to watch. That was one of our main goals from the beginning, to give
people a reason to watch something that they might have have seen yet. So
keep up the hard work and dedication.
Next month's mission will be sent out tomorrow, and I think
it will be one that everyone will enjoy.
PUTRID's
NASCHY TRIBUTE
While this is something that we've been wanting to do for
quite some time, once Paul Naschy passed away, I figured it was even more a
better time for it. We've been wondering for years why we hadn't seen a
Paul Naschy T-shirt before, so decided to get one done ourselves. Of
course, Fright Rags also came out with one that we reported on earlier, which I
know we'll be adding to our collection as well. But even if we didn't get
there first, we did commissioned a piece from our amazing artist
friend Putrid to create a design for a T-shirt featuring our favorite Hombre
Lobo, which you can see below. As you can see, Putrid has once again shown
his amazing talent and we're pretty excited about it.
We are planning to have these shirts available in time for
the HorrorHound Indianapolis show near the end of March. These will be
sold exclusively through us, so if you are interested, please send us an email
for more details. Otherwise, you'll be able to see the shirt for your self
at one of the upcoming conventions that we will be at.
UPDATED ARGENTO BOOK
One of the critical studies on Dario Argento was the book
Broken Mirrors/Broken Minds: The Dark Dreams of Dario Argento, written by
Maitland McDonagh, back in 1990. But now, she has expanded the book,
including coverage on Argento's new movies up to and including his most recent
GIALLO. McDonagh told Fangoria, "“The expanded version contains
significant revisions. The chapter on SUSPIRIA and INFERNO, for example,
now incorporates the long-delayed completion of the Three Mothers trilogy with
2007’s MOTHER OF TEARS/LA TERZA MADRE. A detailed new essay picks up where
the 1995 edition left off, examining Argento’s films from THE STENDHAL SYNDROME
through last year’s GIALLO, and addressing his volatile creative relationship
with his daughter Asia. The credits section is also updated to include Argento’s
work since 1995."
The retail price is $22.95, and you could pre-order the book
from the University of Minnesota Press website, but would be much better off
pre-ordering it from Amazon, where you could save about 30% on the price.
Being a collector of reference books, we can't tell you how
essential this book is for any fan of Argento's work. So make sure you put
that on your want list.
THE HILLS RUN RED REVIEW
We have a new review posted with this week's update.
It's for Dave Parker's THE HILLS RUN RED. We've been trying forever to get
a hold of this movie from Netflix, but finally it showed up. So was it
worth the long wait? Click over to our Reviews
section to find out.
HORROR HISTORY
We have added another name in this week's Horror History
Lesson. This writer was responsible (for better or for worse) for some of
the early films to come from Roger Corman. Of course, we've always enjoyed
those early movies, so we really think this guy was a class act, especially for
being able to turn out these scripts on a very short time frame. Head over
to our Horror History page to see just who we're talking about.
MYSTERY PHOTO
I knew our last photo was going to throw people, but wanted to make sure
everyone was paying attention. Although we did get a lot of Richard Lynch
films sent in, so at least he was pretty recognizable. But it is from a
older made-for-TV movie called GOOD AGAINST EVIL. It was actually a pilot
that was never picked up. Lynch seemed to do a few of them back in the
'70s. But just when I thought I would have stumped everyone, I get an
email from scholar Hoby Abernathy who knew the movie it was frmo. So major
kudos to him for pulling that one off, since it was a real tough one. But
thank you to everyone who did send in their answers. Shows me you're still
trying.
So with this one, we're going to go with a little
easier.....well, maybe. Good luck, and as always, click
HERE to send in
your answer.
2-22-10 FINAL WEEK FOR
WEREWOLVES
Just a friendly reminder for those enlisted in the Kryptic
Army, that this is the last week for our February Mission. If you're not
enlisted and would like more information, just click HERE.
For those who are participating, feel free to head over to the message board to
see what everyone else has been watching, and don't be afraid to make your own
comments. Nothing better than a good discussion going on horror movies!

WOLFMAN THOUGHTS
And since I've gotten quite a few emails asking me if
I'd seen THE WOLFMAN yet, I figured now that I have seen it, I can post a few
thoughts here. Being that it is a big Hollywood remake, I'd say that they
did a pretty good job. It may not have been the best movie ever, but I did
enjoy it. The look of the film was incredible. I did think some of
the CGI moments were a little bit too cartoonish at times, but nothing so bad
that it spoiled the moment....just made me aware of it.
So the bottom line is that I do think it's well worth
watching and was entertaining, I'll be sure to pick it up when it hits DVD so I
can actually see the whole movie.
MYSTERY PHOTO
Since a lot of people got our photo from THE PROWLER, I thought I would go with
something more obscure, but was pleasantly surprised to see so many people
sending in the correct answer again. The shot is from Amando de Ossorio's
3rd entry in his Blind Dead series, EL BUQUE MALDITO (1974). Of course,
it's also known as HORROR OF THE ZOMBIES, THE GHOST GALLEON, GHOST SHIPS OF THE
BLIND DEAD, and many others. The folks with the correct answers were Hoby
Abernathy, Aaron Christensen, Eric Engelmann, Shawn Jacobs, David Schmidt, Mike
Sheilds, Lisa Stewart, Wayne Teeter, and Tom White. Well done, folks.
Always nice to see people out there that know their Spanish horror.
So let's get to our latest photo. We're going to go
with something a little tougher this time, even thought the face should be
pretty familiar. Give it some thought and let's see what you come up with.
Good luck, and as always, click
HERE to send in
your answer.
HORSEMAN HITTING
DVD
We reviewed this movie a little while ago, which you can
still read in our Review section, or by clicking
HERE. But it is finally getting a DVD release,
though not sure if it's in the UK or here in the States as well. But none
the less, if you do get the chance to see it, we recommend it. It's a
tough film, but well made.
For more information about the movie, you can also check out
the official site by clicking
HERE.
2-14-10 FEBRUARY MISSION HALFWAY POINT
Just a friendly reminder to the members of our Kryptic Army
and this months mission. We've already gotten a few entries in, which have
been posted on the Kryptic Army Message Board, which you can get to by clicking
HERE. Feel free to post your comments on the other entries.
BLUE UNDERGROUND ANSWER & MORE
As we mentioned in our last update, we had sent in a question
to Blue Underground about their upcoming Blu-Ray release of José Ramón Larraz's VAMPYRES,
and their comments about gore that has been missing from previous releases.
Here's their response:
Thanks for your email. There was
footage cut from all previous versions of VAMPYRES, but was restored for Blue
Underground's DVD release. This missing footage has also been newly transferred
in HD and restored to the Blu-ray release. The short answer is that the running
times of our DVD and Blu-ray are identical, and they both contain the same
amount of missing footage.
So in other words, it is the same version
as the previous DVD release, but has been newly transferred in HD. So my
short answer is that while it's not really false advertising, it could be very
misleading to those newer fans that might not know any better.
But just when I get ready to move on, I read a press release
of BU's new Blu-Ray edition of Joseph Zito's THE PROWLER. The news bit
(that originally came from Bloody-Disgusting.com) says the Blu-Ray will have a
new hi-def transfer and it will be presented completely uncut and uncensored!
Okay guys...one more time. Blue Underground's first DVD release of the
film was also advertised as "uncut and uncensored". So once again, they
are not being dishonest, but is just a little misleading to customers who might
not know, making it sound like this has something different than previously.
To me, that shows that they are not really about the fans as much as they are
trying to make a quick buck. How about a little integrity, huh?
MYSTERY PHOTO
Of course, while on the subject of THE PROWLER, that was were our last photo was
from, which features some amazing kills (many thanks to Tom Savini). We do
think it's one of the best '80s slasher films out there. If you haven't
seen this film, find it now.
But out of all the years I've been doing these Mystery
Photos, I don't think I've gotten as many responses as I did with this last one.
Some times it makes me wonder if people just aren't bothering to respond, or
that they don't know the photo. But it was pretty obvious with this one,
that a lot of you knew the photo and sent in their answer. Here's all the
names for this week's photo: Hoby Abernathy, Aaron Christensen, Nancy Cremer, Mike Dudley, Dave
Friedman, Victor Ives, Lee Marohn, John Pata, David Schmidt, Wayne Teeter, and
Will Wilson. Great job to you all, and thanks again for taking the few
seconds to send it your guess. It is much appreciated.
So let us take a gander at our latest photo and see if we can
top last week's number of correct answers. This one isn't going to be as
easy I'm afraid. But good luck, and as always click
HERE to send in
your answer.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TAYLOR!
Wanted to take a brief minute to wish my nephew Taylor a big
Happy Birthday. Taylor is only 8 years old, but seems to be a huge horror
fan in the making. Makes me wonder if this is just a passing phase, but
knowing that I was already hooked at that age as well, you just never know.
Must run in the family.
So hopefully you had a monstrously good birthday, Taylor, and
I'll see you soon!
SCI-FI SPECTACULAR 4
This year's Sci-Fi Spectacular 4, being held at the historic
Music Box Theatre,
is a good news/bad news item for me. The bad news is that this is taking
place on April 10th, which is the same weekend as Cinema Wasteland. And as
much as I'd like to stay for this show, the Wasteland is the best movie show and
convention out there. I've been there since the first one, and haven't
missed one yet, and don't plan on starting. But that doesn't mean we won't
support Movieside for putting this show together. Because they have one
hell of a lineup planned for this year, along with an extremely talented guest.
That would be director Larry Cohen, who gave us great films like IT'S ALIVE, THE
STUFF, GOD TOLD ME TO, and Q: THE WINGED SERPENT, not to mention having his hand
in quite a few other films projects. At the Spectacular, they will be
screening Q: THE WINGED SERPENT.
Other titles that have been announced are as followes:
THEM! (1954), Mario Bava's PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES (1965), John Carpenter's DARK
STAR (1974) and THEY LIVE (1988), FLASH GORDON (1980), and Cohen's Q: THE WINGED
SERPENT (1982).
Pretty sure there will be a few more announcements about the
lineup, but not sure yet. When we find out, you'll find out!
2-7-10
NIGHTBREED UNCUT AT HORRORHOUND WEEKEND Since they had already been working on a NIGHTBREED reunion
with writer/director Clive Barker and actors Oliver Reed, Hugh Ross, and
recently added Doug Bradley, now they have going to premiere something that fans
have been wanting to see for decades. And that is the screening for the
first time will be an uncut print of NIGHTBREED. Tickets will be given
away at the HorrorHound booth on the morning of Saturday the 27th. Gold
Pass members will be given tickets to the screening when they check in on
Friday. There is limited seating for this event, so make sure you get the
info at the show of what you need to do not to miss this once in a lifetime
chance. The screening will take place at 5pm on Saturday following a rare
NIGHTBREED cast panel and presentation.
Another guests that has been announced is the immortal Sid
Haig, director William Malone, Louise Robey (from the FRIGHT THE 13th TV
series), and Charles Craig (newscaster from the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING
DEAD). For all the details and complete guest lineup, head over to the
HorrorHound Weekend site by clicking
HERE. This
is going to be one hell of a show, so hopefully you are planning to come out for
the fun.
HORROR HISTORY
This week's lesson shows us one of the men behind the great
studio that dripped blood, and definitely had a hand in why the studio became as
successful as it did. Head over to our Horror History page to discover who
we're talking about and more, just by clicking HERE.
HAMMER FILMS TO REMAKE THE
WOMAN IN BLACK
Susan Hill's 1983 novel The Woman in Black was first
adapted into a very successful and long running stage play in 1987. In
1989, it was made into a made-for-TV movie which was scripted by famous
horror/sci-fi writer Nigel Kneale. The film deals with a young lawyer
going to settle the estate of a dead client. But once he gets there, he
keeps catching glimpses of the title character. It is incredible creepy and comes
highly recommended. But now it seems the new Hammer Films has picked it up
to film a newer version of it, with James Watkins to direct, who had recently
directed EDEN LAKE. According to Hammer President and CEO Simon Oakes,
“THE WOMAN IN BLACK is an iconic British horror story, and so makes a perfect
match for Hammer. Jane Goldman has written a terrific screenplay and with
James Watkins at the helm, we feel that this feature adaptation of Susan Hill’s
classic novel will be both dynamic and terrifying.”
While we haven't seen anything from this newer version of
Hammer Films, we hope for the best. And if anything else could come out of
this, maybe the 1989 version will get a DVD release over here in the states so
more people can see it.
MYSTERY PHOTO
It was nice to see many more emails this last week to recognized our Mystery
Photo from last week. Sure, it might have been due to some of them
watching the movie for their January Mission for the Kryptic Army, but none the
less, great job to those who knew it. It was of course the great Lionel
Barrymore in drag in the 1936 film DEVIL DOLL. Kudos go out to Hoby
Abernathy, Aaron Christensen, Nancy Cremer, Dave Friedman, David Schmidt, and
Mike Shields. Job well done.
Now lets take a look at this one and see how you do.
Good luck, and as always click

FINALLY
A NASCHY T-SHIRT!!!
One of our favorite T-Shirt places is
Fright Rags. They
have consistently came up with some great designs, especially thanks to artist
Jeff Zornow. For years, I have been asking different T-Shirt dealers "How
come no Paul Naschy T-shirts?". Well finally my wish has come true.
Fright Rags have several new designs, including the one to the right, LA NOCHE
DE WALPURGIS. Other new designs include art from THE HOWLING, MAXIMUM
OVERDRIVE, THE SHINING, CREEPSHOW 2, ZOMBIE and CHRISTINE. Their shirts
always look great.

the new images.
THE WOLFMAN AND THE CURSE OF
HOLLYWOOD
We recently read something on the
Shock Till You Drop
website that pisses me off, but on the same note doesn't surprise me.
Director Joe Johnson spoke about his new film THE WOLFMAN which opens next
Friday. He mentions that there will be a 17 minute longer cut of the film
when it hits DVD. Apparently the studio wanted the the time to the first
transformation to be quicker.
Okay, first of all, telling me the the film
has been cut down 17 minutes to get to first transformation is basically telling
me why waste your money at the theater to see a cut version of the film, when in
4-5 months, I can purchase the uncut version on DVD. It's also telling me,
which we all have known for a long time, that the the people running the studios
shouldn't be making those kind of decisions for those particular reasons. In
reality, I guess whatever story or plot in those 17 minutes doesn't really matter, as
long as we get to see the transformation first. So why don't they just put
the first transformation in even before the opening credits? Or better
yet, why even have a story? Just have the wolfman running around for 90
minutes, changing back and forth, and ripping people up, with of course some
nudity, because....well, we like nudity. Otherwise, you never know, people
just might be too stupid and bored to wait and not bother to watch the movie and
pay any attention to the story in the first place. GRrrrrrr...
BLU-RAY BATTLE RAGES ON
I am one of those that still has fought the urge to jump to the new DVD format.
Mainly because I think in the very near future, there won't be a physical
medium, but will all be digital downloads or streaming video. And that
would mean that your shiny little store-bought DVD that you're holding in your
hand will go by the wayside, much like 8-tracks and LPs. Sure, the quality
is suppose to be amazing. I'm not doubting that, though I have yet to
personally experience it. I keep hearing on how clear things are and how
much more you can see. Once again, not having been there, can't really say
just yet.
But the one thing that keeps me thinking about it are the
extras. To force movie fans like myself to switch to this new medium, a
lot of the DVD companies are still putting more extras on the Blu-Ray edition
and little or no extras on the standard DVD edition. And that really irks
the hell out of me.
One of these films that is coming out on May 25th, is Lucio
Fulci's CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD (aka GATES OF HELL). Both versions will
have the new featurette: The Making of CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, which will
feature interviews with actress Catriona MacColl, actor Michele Soavi,
production designer Massimo Antonello Geleng, special makeup artist Gino De
Rossi, assistant makeup effects artist Rosario Prestopino, cinematographer
Sergio Salvati, and camera operator Roberto Forges Davanzati. Both
versions will also have the English and Italian trailers, and radio spots and
still gallery.
But the Blu-Ray edition will have the following featurettes
that are not on the regular edition: Acting Among the Living Dead - Interview
with Catriona MacColl, Entering the Gates of Hell - Interview with actor
Giovanni Lombardo Radice, Memories of the Maestro - The cast and crew reminisce
about working with director Fulci, and lastly Marketing of the Living Dead -
Poster and Still Gallery. This is one of those movies that just might get
me to make the jump, which I will do kicking and screaming. Now granted, I
may change my tune when I do, but until then, you'll just have to keep hearing
me complain.
BLUE UNDERGROUND
QUESTION
I do want to mention something about Blue Underground, who is
releasing the CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD disc. According to their website,
this new DVD will contain a "freshly transferred in brain-ripping High
Definition from its original uncensored negative". So this won't be one of
those transfers from the original DVD to Blu-Ray, but a completely brand new
transfer, right? We'll see when the reviews come out, but I for one
wouldn't be surprised if it's a transfer from the original.
And why you ask? Because I don't trust Blue
Underground. Here's an example. On their site advertising the new
Blu-Ray DVD of José Ramón Larraz's VAMPYRES, it
states "Blue Underground is proud to present VAMPYRES in a stunning new
High Definition transfer that restores all of the controversial gore footage
missing from other versions!" Since this had already been released on DVD
from Blue Underground, does this mean that there's more footage that wasn't on
their first release? But wait, looking at that original release, here's
what it says on the back of the sleeve: "featuring a stunning new transfer that
restores all of the controversial gore footage missing from previous version."
Now I may be just being really anal and picky, but when you announce a new DVD
version, and state that it's has gore footage missing from the other versions,
you are implying that there is just that: more footage. It's just
strange that it is the exact same statement made on their first DVD release.
We have sent out an email to Blue Underground asking them for clarification and
will post any response we get from them. But I know this is one DVD that I
won't be buying.
1-31-10 KRYPTIC ARMY
First off, I just to thank everyone who joined our little
Army and that participated in our January Mission. It was great to see
these emails coming in with different titles that were being discovered for the
first time. That's one of the great things about being a horror fan is
that there are always tons of great movies out there waiting to be discovered
for the first time. Doesn't matter if the new films coming out are crap.
Just venture a few years in the past and you'll find some amazing cinema there
waiting for you.
At the time of this update, there's only a few hours left for
this month's challenge. So I'm hoping that if you did get to your movies,
that you sent in your "debriefing", or you have until midnight tonight.
You will receive your instructions for the February Mission tomorrow. Of
course, if you're on our mailing list. If you're not, just click
HERE to sign up.
ZELDA RUBINSTEIN - REST IN PEACE
She might not have been a huge star in the horror genre, but because of her role
in POLTERGEIST, all horror fans know who Zelda Rubenstein was. We had
heard a few months ago that she was being taken off life support, so we figured
it was only a matter of time. She had suffered a mild heart attack and
just never recovered from it. She passed away last Wednesday. But
while she is most known for her role in the Steven Spielberg's....oops,
sorry....Tober Hooper's 1982 film, as well as the rest of the series, she also
had a very memorable role in another horror film, one that is highly underrated.
That is the the 1987 film ANGUISH. If you haven't seen it, don't read
anything about it, just see it.
Our thoughts and wishes go out to her friends and family.
Her memory will live on in the lives of many horror fans because of her work in
the genre.
NEW REVIEW
We have posted a review of one of the best werewolf movies
out there. Or at least, that's what we think! It's for Paul Naschy's
NIGHT OF THE WEREWOLF (1981). Yea, I know what you're thinking, that I
liked it just because it's a Paul Naschy movie. Maybe. But check out
my review to see just why I like it. And why you should see it if you
haven't already. You can get to our Review section by going to our
Features page, or just click
HERE.
HORROR HISTORY
For those that accepted our January Mission, many of you
discovered for the first time this guy who was known for his horror roles in the '30s,
but for some reason isn't that remembered too often. So we're going to try
and change that with this week's Horror History lesson. Head over there to
see who we're talking about. Just click HERE.
MYSTERY PHOTO
Only got 2 correct answers for last week's photo. I figured it would be a
tough one, but thought at least a few more would have gotten it. But that
just means that there's more people that need to experience some of the great
horror films from the Philippines. That is none other than John Ashley
under all that make up, and is from the film BEAST OF THE YELLOW NIGHT (1971).
If you haven't seen it, check it out. Kudos go out to Hoby Abernathy and
Mike Shields for identifying the correct movie. Nice job, guys.
For our next one, we're going back a few more years.
Those of you who participated in the January Mission of the Kryptic Army might
have gotten to this film. I may have given too much away already, so I'll
keep quiet and let you take a look. Good luck, and as always click
HERE to send in
your answer.
1-24-10 KRYPTIC ARMY -
LAST WEEK FOR JANUARY MISSION
Just the last reminder that you only have 1 more week to get
in your mission reports. We will be accepting them until midnight next
Sunday. So don't delay and miss out on the fun and excitement.
WOLFMAN POSTER
Sorry folks, but we're going to have to go on a slight rant
here. In case you weren't aware of it, I'm pretty big nerd when it comes
to movie posters. And it's probably no surprise to long time visitors of
this site to know my feelings on the typical poster art that is used in
Hollywood, especially for horror movies. Since the new remake of THE
WOLFMAN has been in promotion mode since sometime last year when it was first to
come out, there has been an insane number of poster art that has been released
by the studios. That's the great thing about the internet these days, you
can have these images released instantaneously all over the world, without even
printing a single poster. And for us geeks that love collecting movie
posters, we're always hoping that they come up with something good. Being
an American film, trust me, we didn't have our hopes too high though. But
I must say that I was pretty surprised at what they had been putting out,
especially when they've released so many. Take a look:
These are the kind of posters that are
going to get fans to see the movie. Some show some style, some even show
the creature himself. Had Hollywood actually learned a lesson when it
comes to movie poster art and horror films? That we care more about the
artwork and images more than who's in the film? Right.....like that was
ever going to happen. As they say, the proof is in the pudding.
Below is the image of supposedly the official final poster for the theatrical
release.
You've got to be kidding me, right?
Oh sure, we do get a little pic of the creature, but the whole "who's in the
movie" headshot thing is just pathetic. Do I need to break out the poster
shots from SCREAM, THE FACULTY, or H20 to see that they are doing the same thing
all over again? This was even after the infamous Basil Gogos did a poster
art for the film as well. But we get this headshot poster instead.
Oh I know what they're thinking. It's not that tough to figure out.
They knew that horror fans were already going to be seeing this film regardless,
so they didn't need to go after them. This poster is marketed directly at
the non-horror fans, who might go see it just because of who's in it. Yes,
we know Hollywood is nothing more than a business and it seems to make sense on
the bottom line. But it doesn't mean that I have to be happy about and sit
here and keep quiet.
PELOQUIN JOINS
HORRORHOUND WEEKEND
Clive Barker's NIGHTBREED has always been one of our favorite
films. He showed us a world where the real monsters are not the ones with
fangs and horns, but usually the ones hiding in human skin. And one of the
most memorable characters from the film was Peloquin, who made a strong
presence whenever he was on screen. This great creature was played by
British actor Oliver Parker. Many fans might not have known that Parker
was also in both the first two HELLRAISER movies. He also has gotten
behind the camera, and had directed the recent DORIAN GRAY, amongst other films.
So we were extremely excited to hear that Parker has been
added as a guest to the HorrorHound Weekend in Indianapolis next March. I
don't believe that he has ever even done a convention before, so it will be
great to see him, along with Hugh Ross and Clive Barker for a NIGHTBREED
reunion. They will be doing a NIGHTBREED Q&A at the show, and I believe
there will be a screening of the movie as well. It will be great to get
some insight from these two actors on the making of this fan favorite.
The guest list gets bigger and better, making this one show
that you will not want to miss. For all the info, head over to the
official website by clicking
HERE.
MORE CONVENTION NEWS
While we are very excited about the March HorrorHound Weekend coming up, there's
another show shortly after that one that is also going to be an amazing time.
That is the iconic Cinema Wasteland show, taking place on April 9th-11th, where
they will be hosting a huge zombie event that nobody does better. And
topping off this undead party is the 30-Year Anniversary of Lucio Fulci's ZOMBE
(Okay, technically 31 years, but who's counting)! They have announced
Richard Johnson, Ian McCulloch, Al Cliver, and Ottaviano Dell’Acqua (the poster
zombie). Of course, most of these guys are veterans to the horror genre,
with many, many films to their credit. Just check them out on IMDB to see
their massive film list. But it just doesn't stop there. They are
also have many other zombie film stars. They have recently announced
Beatrice Ring (pictured to the right), who starred in Fulci's (or whoever
directed it) ZOMBI 3 (1988), as well as Lamberto Bava's GRAVEYARD DISTURBANCE
(1987). The rest of the guest lineup consists of Bill Hinzman and Kyra
Schon from the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968), Sharon Ceccatti-Hill,
Jim Krut, and Tom Savini from DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978), and Howard Sherman from
DAY OF THE DEAD (1985). So make sure you are making your plans now to
attend the show that is truly is a religious experience! For all the
details, head over to their website by clicking
HERE.
And if you're in the Chicago area, the Hollywood Celebrity &
Memorabilia Show has quite a few genre guests on their current line up.
Here's just a few of the names they have listed: Tracie Lords, Linda Blair,
Gerrit Graham, Olivia Hussey, Richard Kiel, Carol Lynley, Louise Robey, and
Leonard Whiting. The show is taking place on March 13th & 14th at the
Rosemont Hotel @ O'Hare (formerly the Sofitel Hotel O'Hare). For more info
about the show and the complete guest list, just click
HERE.
"MY NAME IS
LEGION, FOR WE ARE MANY."
Chicago's WildClaw Theatre will be presenting their
adaptation of William Peter Blatty's LEGION, opening at the
Viaduct Theater on
March 15th, and running until April 18th. Writer of the original novel THE
EXORCIST, Blatty wrote a sequel to the novel in 1983, entitled LEGION.
This was later made into a film version, directed by Blatty, under the title
EXORCIST 3. The story takes place more than 10 years after the events of
the first book/movie, with Lieutenant Kinderman investigating a series of
murders that look very simliar to that of a serial killer, who just happens to
be dead.
Being adapted for the stage by WildClaw Artistic Director
Charley Sherman, and being directed by Anne Adams (who had directed WildClaw's
THE REVENANTS), as well as all the usual excellent input from WildClaw's
incredible ensemble, such as Allison Greaves, Paul Foster, Brian Amidei & Scott
T. Barsotti, this is something that we are very much looking forward to seeing.
Being a fan of the novel and the movie, we can not wait to see how they have
adapted this for a stage version.
For more information about WildClaw, head over to their
website by clicking
HERE.
HAUSU
PLAYING AT SISKEL FILM CENTER IN FEB.
This rare Japaense 1977 haunted house movie, also known as
simple HOUSE, has been drawing
a lot of attention over the last year and will be playing next month at the Gene Siskel Film Center. Directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi, this give shows us some
truly bizarre and strange images that are still impressive today. Head over
to the Film Center's website by clicking
HERE
and check out the trailer they have posted. See if that doesn't give you
the itch to explore something different and very strange.
The film starts on February 26th and runs until March 4th.
MYSTERY PHOTO
Yes, our photo from last week is of Roman Polanski in drag from his 1976 film
THE TENANT. If you haven't seen this one, you need to check it out.
But make sure you are not preoccupied with anything else and will have time to
ponder this film, since it will stick with you for days afterwards. Kudos
go out to Hoby Abernathy, Aaron Christensen, Eric Engelmann, Dave Friedman, and
Krista Soli. Nice job, people!
So let's take a gander at our latest photo and see what you
can come up with. As always, good luck and click

HORROR HISTORY
We have added a BIG name for this week's entry into our
Horror History lesson. I'm pretty sure his films are familiar, but let's
just see if you know the man they called Mr. BIG. Head over to our
Horror History page for this week's lesson.
1-17-10 KRYPTIC ARMY -
JANUARY MISSION HALFWAY POINT
Okay troops, we are just past the halfway point of the month.
We've had a few "debriefings" trickle in so far, but just wanted to put out a
little reminder that I wouldn't wait too long before you start your mission.
If you're still not sure which movies to watch and need some help, I would
suggest hitting either IMDB or even Wikipedia. And if you still need some
help, feel free to contact us, and we'll do our best to help out the best we
can.
HORROR HISTORY
For this week's lesson, we head over the island of the
Philippines, to where back in the '60s & '70s, they were making some pretty
entertaining exploitation films. And our latest entry in our Horror
History lesson had a part in many of those films.
MYSTERY PHOTO
We have to admit that our last photo was a little tough. It is from the
1982 film SUPERSTITION, which for some reason is pretty obscure. It is
available on DVD, so if you haven't seen it, I would recommend you checking it
out. If you a fan of '80s films with some over the top gore (which you
could see from that photo) and some outrageous stuff going on, I think you'll
enjoy it. But a "Job Well Done" out to the few, the proud, the geeks, that
were able to recognize the movie. They were Hoby Abernathy, Rick Hayden,
Eric Engelmann, and William Wilson.
We've posted our latest photo, so take a look and put those
thinking caps on. To be honest, we may have use a shot from this movie
before, but not sure. But if I did, I don't think I used this particular
shot. So good luck, and as always click
HERE to send in
your answer.
HOUSE OF THE DEVIL PROMO...GENIUS!
We've always been a big fan of Dark Sky Films and the great
job they do putting out some great titles on DVD. But when we heard what
they were doing with the release of Ti West's HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, it just blew
me away. I haven't seen this type of promotion in quite some time, and it
makes me sad that more companies are not doing stuff like Dark Sky is.
First off, in case you haven't seen this on many other sites, they are releasing
an actual VHS version of the film as part of the special edition DVD set that
you can purchase. It's an actual VHS tape that comes in the clamshell box,
just like the good old days. Since the movie has the feel of the '70s &
'80s, this fits in perfect.
But it doesn't stop there. They also released this
little photo of an add for a babysitter. Now if you've seen the movie, you
understand what this is. Just give the number listed there a call for a
little added surprise. Its pretty cool. But the fact that they did
this sort of thing to help promote the movie again shows me that they get it.
They understand what good promotion means. We can wait for more from them.
HAMMER'S ICONS OF SUSPENSE
While we are still anxiously waiting for Columbia Pictures to
release their latest box set, Icons of Suspense: Hammer Films, they are holding
a poll for the fans to select the cover. Below are the 3 different covers,
so all you have to do is click
HERE to be taken to Columbia Classics website and cast your vote. The
movies included in this set are : NEVER TAKE CANDY FROM A STRANGER (1960), THE
SNORKEL (1958), MANIAC (1963), CASH ON DEMAND (1961), STOP ME BEFORE I KILL!
(1960), and THESE ARE THE DAMNED (1963). All of these are classic black
and white films, some of which have never been officially released over here in
the states. And some, like CASH ON DEMAND, will be release uncut for the
first time. We have seen most of these films and highly recommend putting
them on your "to-watch" list when they are released these April.
1-10-10 B-MOVIE
MADNESS NEXT WEEKEND
For those Chicago area horror fans that can't wait for the horror events to
start back up again, make sure you head out to the Portage Theater next weekend
for Horror Society's B-Movie Madness 2. They will be screening Kevin
Tenney's NIGHT OF THE DEMONS (from a 35mm print) and BRAIN DEAD, with Tenney in
attendance. They will also be screening INCEST DEATH SQUAD, with director
Cory Udler attending as well. The other feature film to be screened is
HYPOCHONDRIAC, with writer / star Marv Blauvelt there too.
As usual, there will be dealers (including us) there to tempt
your money away, as well as a lot of other Chicago horror minded fans. So
help fight those winter blues away and come on out for a good time.
For more information, just head over to the
Horror Society.
And while on the subject of the Horror Society, next month
they will be making their journey to the internet airwaves with Horror Society
Live. This will be on BlogTalk Radio and will start on Feb. 3rd.
When we have more details as far as the time and stuff, we'll post it here.
MYSTERY PHOTO Maybe I had you people thinking a little too hard on this
last one, since we didn't get that many responses. The pic was from the
1982 movie VISITING HOURS, starring the ever so menacing Michael Ironside.
Even though he's been in hundreds of movies, he will always been known to horror
fans as the psychotic Darryl Revok from David Cronenberg's SCANNERS (1981).
VISITING HOURS was one of the first movies he did after SCANNERS, casting him as
another villain, since he did it so well previously. Kudos goes out Hoby
Abernathy, Mike Dudley, and Mike Shields for sending in the correct answer.
Let's move on to our latest photo. Hopefully this one
won't be too difficult...Good luck, and as always, just click
HERE to send us
your answer.
NEW REVIEWS:
BOOKS, MOVIES, & MUSIC We have posted a couple new reviews
with this update. The first one is a British film called THE SPELL.
Unfortunately, it's terrible. But you can read our review if you want.
But you will want to check out our review for one of
the best nature-gone-amuck movies ever made. Head over to our
Reviews section to find out more.
We have also posted a new review for an old soundtrack.
It's a compilation of Les Baxter's music for CRY OF THE BANSHEE and AN EVENING
WITH EDGAR ALLAN POE and John Cacavas' HORROR EXPRESS. It might be tough
to get a hold of, but it's well worth it. You can read our review by going
to our Soundtrack Review section, located on our
Features page.
And lastly, we have posted our review of a book that is great
for horror fiends, especially when they having a horror themed party. It's
The Horror Film Quiz Book, that has 1000 questions on tons of different horror
movies. There's nothing too obscure here, but there will be a few
questions that will get you. Trust me.
RETURN OF
HORROR HISTORY
It's been quite some time since we've added a new face to our
Horror History page, but we're trying to get back on track with this. We
have added a new name and face to the page, that of one of the most prolific
composers of the '50s and '60s. Head over to our
Horror History page to check it out and see if
you might know who this guy is.
1-03-10 WELCOME TO
2010
We have made it through another long year of ups and downs,
just like everyone else out there. We have our Year-End-Review posted at
the bottom of this update, mainly since it's so long we wanted to get the rest
of our update out of the way first. So let's get this new year started!
CHAS. BALUN - REST IN PEACE
Chas Balun was one of the most outspoken horror fans out
there, usually campaigning for the little guy, as well as shouting praises for
some of the most notorious gore films out there. He was also an extremely
talented artist. While we were never huge fans of his writings, mainly due
to just a difference of opinions, I give him a lot of credit for fighting the
cause, defending and promoting the horror genre for what it is. So when we
heard of his passing, after a long battle with cancer, we were still sadden
quite a bit. As I've said before, we don't need to agree on all the
movies, but as long as we agree on the genre as a whole. And now we have
lost one of the loudest speakers out there. Our thoughts and wishes go out
to his friends and family. Rest in Peace.
RICHARD LYNCH COMING TO INDY HORRORHOUND
HorrorHound has added another genre icon to their guest
lineup for their Indy show this March. None other than Richard Lynch, who
has probably played more bad gusy, and done them so well, in so many movies,
that it's really hard to count. He gave us memorable characters in
VAMPIRE, BAD DREAMS, CUT AND RUN, NECRONOMICON, nad countless more. And
not just in the horror genre either, but in EVERY genre out there, from action
films like INVASION USA, or fantasy films like SWORD AND THE SORCERER, he is
always giving us a character we love to hate. In our 20+ years of going to
conventions, Lynch is one of our favorites that we've never had the chance to
see before. So we are very excited to see him join the ever growing list
for the March HorrorHound show in Indianapolis. For all the details about
the show, just head over to their websites:
HorrorHound Magazine or
HorrorHound Weekend.
KRYPTIC ARMY CHALLENGE
BEGINS!
We have sent out our first mission for our troops. If
you haven't joined our Army (and our mailing list) then you can not participate.
All you have to do is join our mailing list, which you can do this at the bottom
of this page. Or if you want to read about all the details of the
Challenge, then head over to the Kryptic Army page, by clicking
HERE. You can enlist in the Army at any point
during the month. If you join after the month has started, you will still
receive your mission for that month in an email within 24 hours, but you won't
have as much time to complete the mission as everyone else. So don't
delay. The Kryptic Army Needs You!
MYSTERY PHOTO
We were kind of surprised at the few responses we got from last week's Mystery
Photo. We figured by going with a classic film that a lot of people would
have gotten it. Granted, I did make it a little trickier, since while it
might be obvious who the character is, there's a few of those movies out there.
Well, the shot is that of Lon Chaney Jr., making his first appearance as
Frankenstein's creature, in the 1942 film THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN. That
is Bela Lugosi bending over in the photo cleaning the chunks of dried sulfur off
of him. That's right folks, sulfur. Not snow. I think that was
the tricky part. But kudos goes out to Vic, Hoby Abernathy and Dave Friedman
for getting the right movie.
For our next photo, we're kind of doing the same thing.
You might recognize this actor right away, but think a little before sending in
your answer. As always, click
HERE to send in
your answer. Good luck!
NEW REVIEWS
We have finally posted our review for ABOMINABLE, which have been working on and
off for about a month now. For some reason, we just couldn't get it
finished and ready to post. But now it is done and has been posted in our
Review section. Just click HERE to be take
there.
We have also posted our review for Shadows & Light: Journeys
with Outlaws in Revolutionary Hollywood, the autobiography of Gary Kent.
Kent worked on some iconic cult films, like SATAN'S SADIST, and has worked with
tons of people in Hollywood from the likes of Jack Nicholson to Monte Hellman,
to Don Coscarelli. Head over to our Book Review
Section to red more details on what we thought of the book.
BLOOD SPATTERED BOOK
We're always on the look out for new and interesting books
coming out to support. In a time of internet blogs and whatnot, we're
rejoice when we hear of a new horror reference book being published. This
one is from Chris Alexander, formerly of Rue Morgue, now residing at Fangoria,
and is called Blood-Spattered Book. It's a collection of old and
new essays on
different movies such as Joe D'Amato's ANTHROPOPHAGUS, Lucio Fulci's CITY OF THE
LIVING DEAD, Paul Naschy's COUNT DRACULA's GREAT LOVE, THE DEVIL'S NIGHTMARE,
PSYCHOMANIA, and many others. There are also interviews with different
people in the film business, film like director Tobe Hooper, producer/directors
Roger Corman & Mark Damnon, writer Richard
Matheson, and composer Fabio Frizzi, and more.
The book is being published by our friends at Midnight
Marquee some time early this month. When we get more details, such as the
price, we'll keep you posted. But I would add this onto your "to-get" list
now.
WOLFMAN SITE OPENS
It has been quite a long time since there a movie that I am more excited to see, as
well as so nervous that it is not going to be as great as I'm hoping, than the
new remake of The Wolfman. With
all the release date changes, and all the other production problems, that does
not bode well for anymore. Especially one that is as big as this one is.
So next month, I will be seeing this on the big screen, and can only hope that
it's good.
But in the meantime, they have launched the official website
for the movie. It does have some cool wallpapers, as well as giving you
some history lessons on lycanthropes. Just click
HERE to check it
out.
SIR PETER JACKSON?
Now who would have ever thought that the demented mind that
gave us films like BAD TASTE, MEET THE FEEBLES, and BRAID DEAD would ever get a
Knighthood? Apparently due to the money he has brought into the country,
from the tourism coming in from the LORD OF THE RINGS movies to the huge boost
to the film industry that he helped developed, the Queen is pretty happy about
all of that. Now that is something to make you scratch your head...
OUR KRYPTIC YEAR-END-REVIEW
Okay folks, here's what you've all been waiting for.
This turned out a quite a bit longer than I originally imagined, but I guess
that just means the year was jammed packed. Let's take a look
back.....shall we?
ALWAYS REMEMBER…
There were several high points last year, as well as a few low ones as
well. One of the lower one that hit me the most was the death of Paul Naschy at the
end of November. The horror genre really lost one of the last remaining icons
that day. But even with his passing, it is making me strive even more to get
his work out there to people that are not aware of his massive filmography, let
alone talent. So while we are still sadden by this lost, we do know that we
will also keep his memory alive and can even bring him back to life, each time
we pop in one of his movies. And this is something that we will continue to do
so, on a regular basis.
Another passing that
really hit home was that of Clayton Hill. Clayton was most known as the
“sweater zombie” in Romero’s DAWN OF THE DEAD, among other job titles. If you
ever had the chance to meet Clayton at a convention, you’d remember him.
Between him and his wife Sharon, they were a lot of fun and just great people.
Here is a list of other great talent
from the genre that we lost last year:
Chas.
Balun, Jack Cardiff, David Carradine, Don Edmonds, Clayton Hill, Tony Kendall,
Paul Naschy, Lou Perryman,
Dan O’Bannon, Edmund Purdom, Robert Quarry, Ray Dennis Steckler, and Harry Alan
Towers.
We didn’t want to end last year on a sad note and dwell on the
passing of these people, but to use it as a reminder to make sure that these
people, and their work, remains alive and well in our hearts and minds. We are
the ones that can truly make them and their work immortal. So make sure you’re
doing your part!
HIGHLIGHTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
But let’s get to the higher points from 2009. Where to start? It was great to
see two filmmakers finally get noticed and awarded for their work in the film
industry. Jess Franco received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Goya Awards
(Spain’s version of Oscars), which still boggles my mind. Not that he was
giving this award, because he surely deserves it. But I just never thought I
would see a montage of his films being screened at a big event like the Goya’s,
showing some of the cheesiest films, tons of nudity, and the rest of insanity
that is Jess Franco. So for him to be recognized and given this award shows the
talent in this man.
The other
filmmaker was Roger Corman who received an “honorary” Oscar for all of his work.
I was thrilled to see him finally get the official recognition that they
have deserved years ago. The man not only cranked out tons of movies, which
were always successful, but he also tutored hundreds, if not thousands of people
in the filmmaking business. Granted, it would have been even better to see him
receive this award during Oscar night, but when you think about it, Corman has
never been about the big Hollywood thing, and really wouldn’t have fit there
anyway. But we are thrilled for both him and Franco.
Another
highlight of this year was that after searching for this film for over 30 years,
I was finally able to get a copy of The World Beyond, a TV-movie that I
had only seen once before, back in January of 1978, but it had stuck in my mind
since then. Was it as good as I remembered? If you’re seeing it again through
the eyes of a 12 year old, then yes, it was great. It’s so great when those
childhood memories are not spoiled so many years later. Even if we might be
viewing them from a slightly skewed point of view. Its also great when you
can find something that had such a powerful impact on you as a child, that might
be a little piece of the puzzle as to who we are today.
But I have
to say that the biggest highlight for me personally this year was joining the
writing staff at HorrorHound magazine. I was honored to be asked to join and
have been having a lot of fun. The staff at HorrorHound are not only a
bunch of great people, but are dedicated to putting out a great magazine for
horror fans. If you would have told me back in my high school
days that I would actually be writing for a nationally syndicated magazine, I
would have thought you were on crack. Wait…we didn’t have crack back then…..It
just shows that you never know what you’re going to use later on in life. So
pay attention out there, kiddies! Just a little word of advice from your ol’
Uncle Jon…
It was
also a real thrill to see that the Horror 101 book received a Rondo Award
nomination. Sure it didn’t win, but the fact that it was even nominated
shows that people not only understood what we were doing, but enjoyed it as
well. Still proud to be involved in such a project, and still get a kick
when people mention how much they've enjoyed the book. It shows that
people still are reading!
I also had
another first for me and that was being involved with Fanex Files: Hammer Films DVD that came out this
year from Midnight Marquee. Aaron Christensen and I had the chance to
participate in this back in while in Baltimore back in 2007. The final product turned out pretty
good. For someone who was at those Fanex shows conventions originally, it was really great to be able
to see some of those Q&A’s again. Fans of Hammer Films, whether new or old,
should get a kick out of this DVD.
KRYPTIC
WORLD TOUR 2009 CLOSES
We had a pretty good tour this year, even though we really
didn’t make it out of the Midwest. But we hit plenty of shows and always had a
good time. From the Wasteland and HorrorHound shows, to the smaller film fests
here in Chicago from the likes of Movieside and Horror Society, we want to thank
you guys for all the hard work that you put into making sure all of these fans
have a great time at your events. These shows really are the highlights of
our year. As we’ve said many times before, these are like mini-family
reunions, and it’s always a blast to see all of our friends. And we plan
to do it all over again in 2010, especially with some of the shows that we are
already planning on attending. See you there!
BEST OF WHAT WE WATCHED IN 2009 LIST!
This isn’t going to be like most people’s list, since I don’t
confine my list to just movies that came out in one particular year. Mainly
since we don’t see every movie that comes out each year. Then there are some
foreign movies that don’t see an official release here in the states until well
after it came out outside the US. So this is our list of “Best of what we’d
seen in 2009”. Read and enjoy. And of course, we always like to hear feedback.
BEST OF 2009
In 2008, we had finally started keeping a record of
what horror movies we watch during the year . That year we only got to about
175 movies. So our goal for 2009 was to at least break 200, though we would
have liked to hit 225. Well, the finally count is 218. I can’t tell you how
much easier it is to go back what you’ve watched over the year, especially if
you’re reviewing it for some sort of “best of list”….but who’s dumb enough to do
something like that…..
Strangely enough, as I was going through my list of what I
watched in 2009, writing titles that I thought impressed me the most, it seemed
a lot of them came from outside the US. Wonder why that could be? We
did revisit a lot of great classics in 2009, like the BLOOD ISLAND trilogy from
the Philippines, and a nice chunk of Jess Franco films (highly recommending his
1966 film THE DIABOLICAL DR. Z to anyone who hasn't seen it yet.) throughout the
year. But let's take a look at some newer films first.
But actually there were two films from the US that did make my list. The
first one was MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3-D. Yea, I know. I can’t believe
it as much as the rest of you, that an American remake of a favorite ‘80s
slasher film would have been that entertaining. I enjoyed it so much that
I actually caught this in the theater twice when it came out. I thought
the 3-D effects were great and very effective. They used it throughout the
movie, not just for the typical 3-D gimmicks. It had plenty of blood and
guts. Now, I haven’t seen it on video since it came out, so I’m not sure
how it might hold up in a regular 2-D format, but I just know that I was pretty
impressed in the theater.
The other
American film that I would consider one of the top of my favorites list was a
film that was actually made 2 years before it finally came out. And that is
Michael Dougherty’s TRICK ‘r TREAT. Usually when a film builds up this
reputation of how great it is, with internet rumors and reviews squeaking out
from special screenings and what not, it is really tough to have the movie pay
off when it has been built up so much. But this film does just that. A great
homage to the good old fashion anthology films, but also done a little
differently. It was funny, scary, gory, creepy, and everything else one could
want in a movie. This film brought back the fun and tradition of the Halloween
holiday. I know that this film will be pulled out at least once every Halloween
from now, making it a holiday requisite.
Our next
two films were both made in countries known for cold and wintery settings. The
first one was PONTYPOOL, a Canadian film that was one of the most original
horror films that I had seen in a very long time. It is also a film that
creeped me out more than a film has done in a very, very long time. And the
best part it was all done with style. The use of close-ups and audio really set
the chills loose for me. Plus the fact that they took a very old and tired
sub-genre and really gave it a nice fresh twist.
The other film came from way over in Norway. When we first heard about a
Norwegian horror film that deals with Nazi zombies, we were pretty excited.
Tommy Wirkola’s DEAD SNOW proved to be one of the most entertaining and fun
movies that I’ve had in a long time. From the over-the-top use of gore, but
also using some great camera style and atmosphere, it proved to be one of my top
films this year. Seemingly very influenced by the early work of Peter Jackson,
this is the type of film that could be watching countless times and still be
enjoyed.
Another film
was one that fans had been waiting for over 40 years for this film to be made.
It was for the return of Zé do Caixão, better known as Coffin Joe, in his film
EMBODIMENT OF EVIL. This film finally completes the trilogy that Brazilian
filmmaker José Mojica Marins started back in 1964 with AT MIDNIGHT I’LL TAKE
YOUR SOUL, and followed with THIS NIGHT I’LL POSSESS YOUR CORPSE three years
later. But after many false starts over the years, Marins was finally able
to get this third film made. And it was amazing that even though it was
made 40 years later, it still had the same feeling and atmosphere as the first
two. There were plenty of scenes in this movie that just blew me away.
Some other
films that we want to highlight from last year are not necessarily new films,
but ones that we had seen for the first time that we think are worth mentioning.
THE CHILDREN was a British film that technically came out in December of
'08, but most didn't see it until 2009. I'm not a big fan of killer child
movies, mainly because they can be pretty disturbing. And this one really
is. It's a great movie, but one that I probably won't find myself watching
again.
I've
always said that no matter how long of a horror fan that you've been, there are
always some undiscovered gems out there waiting for you. And last year
proved it time and time again. THE WITCHES' HAMMER was a Czechoslovakian
film made in 1970, based on the actual transcripts of witch trials that happened
in the late 1600's. While not as graphic as Michael Reeves WITCHFINDER
GENERAL (1968), the film still packs one hell of a punch and leaves the viewer
in a grim mood. The fact that it's based on actual events is even more
frightening.
And
lastly, we want to mention to Spanish films that we got to last year. The
first one was Alejandro Amenábar's first feature lenght film, TESIS (1996).
Not sure why it took me so long to get to it, but it was well worth the wait.
Great thriller about a film student that while doing research on violence in the
media, stumbles across what looks to be a real snuff film. The other film
is called TIMECRIMES and came out in 2007. The movie does deal with time
travel, but that really is not the main part of the movie. Highly
entertaining and immediately keeps the viewer guessing, but is not one of those
where you need a M.I.T. graduate to explain it to you.
So that’s
our list, and our Year-End-Review, for what it’s worth. As always, we’d love to
hear your opinions and thoughts. And here’s to hoping that 2010 is going to be
an even bigger and better year. I know I am looking forward already to some of
the conventions that we have scheduled for the early part of the year. We hope
to see our old friends there, as well as make plenty of new ones.
